Chapter 05: Act II

A TWISTED WONDERLAND: ACT II—

§ instructions.

The Second Act is underway! This is the designated log for all Main Scenes. Others are free to create their own toplevels for the Sub Quests, which are detailed below. Each Main Scene has their own unique toplevel and those cast into the roles are to thread their scene under each. All scene instructions are provided in the toplevels.

Everyone is still starting from the forest of doors and will have to go through them to their area. Essences are back to normal and bound to their respective Aspect, however those who participate in scenes will have their Essence replaced with one based on the character they're playing (ex, Alice roles will now have Alice Essence at their disposal). This is only limited to the scenes—once they're back out they will have their Essence again. There are various items scattered throughout Wonderland that act as power ups and will grant additional Wonderland character Essence abilities. Example, wearing a top hat will grant bonus Mad Hatter abilities. These power ups are only available for the sub quests.

Finally, just to be clear, characters who are in Main Scenes are not immediately dropped in to their location and will have to pass through the designated door and then return. Threading all of that isn't necessary, but it's to help give a better idea that characters can take a break between scenes or wait a bit to help with other things like the Sub Quests.

Feel free to refer to the Game Notes for more detailed info as well as ask questions or clarifications.

§ sub quests.

Everyone is free to participate in the Sub Quests. There are no specific top levels, so you're free to incorporate them however you wish in your own top level.

¶ I. Courtroom Blitz. One of the doors leads to a giant courtroom that looks more like a combat ring complete with large crowds of spectators and a "judge" presiding over the matches. However, instead of it being cutthroat fighting, most of the locals participating are cards and everyone must fight using random silly props to try to score as many points as possible or knock the opponent off from the platform. Of course, nothing here is normal, and the battle platform will shift and move, large pillars sometimes rising up and random glitter bombs dropping down. The judge may even summon a giant (rubber) gavel to try and smash the fighters. Rather than this accomplishing anything important, it seems as if these bouts are to try and help train the cards to fight the good war in Wonderland as well as bolster confidence. Give them all a good show and help teach them a thing or two about (improv) fighting!

¶ II. The Horsey Moves in an L. Another door leads to a giant chess board and everyone takes the place of a chess piece, taking either the red or white side. Here is where most of the twisted clones are, so it is up to the Aspects to try and deal with them by defeating them on the board. The problem is everyone is limited to the moveset of the piece they replaced. Pawns can only move one space a turn, knights are three and over, bishops diagonal, rooks in a straight line. There are no Kings or Queens, but their roles are completely empty so no one has to worry about protecting them. When Aspects meet an opposing piece, they must defeat them to move on. This can either be through fighting or some other method to knock them off the space. At least they have their Essence abilities to use! If Aspects end up meeting each other, they do not have to fight. In fact they can team up to try and take out a nearby blot or clone, or swap roles to continue progressing through the board.

¶ III. Mirror Clones. Not only do the Aspects have to worry about Twisted Wonderland clones, but they also have to worry about their own clones. A mirror will sometimes rise up on the board and a clone of the Aspects will appear. It will try to take the original's place, sometimes even immediately disappearing to appear somewhere else on the board near another Aspect. The only way to destroy it is by destroying the mirror, but act fast before it fools the others. It is possible to become trapped within the mirror, and in that case the clone must be taken care of first.

¶ IV. Beware the Jabberwocky and the Bandersnatch. They occasionally pop out of nowhere. When one appears, all rules are gone and everyone can rush in to deal with them. Vorpal blades and… dog treats will appear on the battlefield which Aspects can use to hack at the monsters. The Bandersnatch will be surprisingly interested in the treats, but the Jabberwocky doesn't seem to be hungry for anything but Aspect flesh. As if things weren't dangerous enough, the clones might snatch blades to wield against the monsters, the Aspects, just about anyone within snickersnacking range.

¶ V. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt!

[She immediately squeezes their laced fingers together, taking the gesture as permission to curl closer to him. Minako sets her head on his shoulder and closes her eyes against the ache building in her own eyes.

She'd been numb about her parents' death, too, and inundated with the same pity. But pretending she was fine had ended it all sooner, and from there, acting like she was fine had been her modus operandi. In a culture that prided itself with being a collective, it felt obvious to join it again and not stick out. And in that sense, even if Minato thinks that she's in the right for making an effort to go back to normal, she thinks that she was more of a coward for it than he was. He'd decided not to let others influence his feelings, whereas she'd rolled over and ignored her grief all the faster.

Still, regardless of what happened or which of them turned out "better" in the end, the fact remains that both of them suffered. It's a morbidly comforting thought, another reminder that they really are two sides of the same coin, and that she can't-- won't-- ever abandon him. That instinctive protectiveness she felt for him when she'd forgotten her memories is proof that this camaraderie has been carved into her heart, regardless of how short their friendship has been.]

Yeah. I know.

[Minako squeezes their hands again tightly. Words are hard right now, so many iterations of how to reply stuck in her throat and getting jumbled up. In the end, she goes with something that she thinks he might want to hear, because it's been something she's wanted for a long time, too.]

I think...I think your mom and dad would've been happy that you made it that far. It was hard for you, and there were so many obstacles in your way for so long, but you kept going despite everything. You still were able to believe in the goodness in people even when they'd treated you wrong. You found a new sense of self, found friends who cared about you, and you were able to be honestly, truly happy with them in the end.

[She starts blinking rapidly, trying to stop herself from tearing up.]

They would've been so proud of you. I'm proud of you, Minato. All the things you've done since that day on the bridge, they made you into a good person, and I'm so, so glad that this impossible world made it possible for me to meet you.

[They both had their ways of dealing with the grief and their life after their parents' deaths. Minato would never fault her for trying to be normal after all that. He couldn't. It was in this same moment that he thought much the same. That Minako was just another side of the same coin they were made from. Different, of course, but the same in other ways. It felt nice to have that feeling of someone actually wanting to protect him again, of family wanting to protect him.

Minato found himself closing his eyes tightly, chest suddenly hitching at her words and it was too late, tears welled and overflowed because it is something he wanted to hear. The last thing he remembered before darkness had overtaken him, before Aigis had sealed Ryoji away inside of his heart, was his mother telling him to leave. Even as she burned, even as he was certain she was in pain, she stared him right in the eyes and told him to live. He never really knew if he fulfilled that and while Minako was certainly not a stand-in for his mother, it was profound all the same to hear.]

You...you're so much better with words than I could ever be, you know? Heh... [It was a very wobbly, wet laugh that left him. He really wasn't good with words. But he was trying.] I feel like I would just be stealing your thunder but... I'm proud of you as well. And I think your parents would be too. You let yourself do more than get halfway with SEES, with... with the world. To let yourself really feel happy and protect what you care about.

[He wrapped his free arm around her, tugging her ever closer.]

I'm more than proud to call you my big sister... if that's okay with you.

[He had long since caught how protective she was of him and while it wasn't like little sisters couldn't protect their older brothers... well, it just seemed right in this case. Even if she wasn't any older than he.]

Minato...thank you.

[Minako laughs, soft and sniffly, as he tugs her into a hug, winding her arms around him to return it. They must be a pretty odd sight to any of the other Aspects nearby, two teenagers weeping over each other in an impromptu therapy session. And she'd agree that this isn't quite the ideal place for one. But she thinks both of them have needed this for a very long time. Even with SEES around, they held parts of themselves back for the sake of the team and their mission, and she knows, even as she was fading away on the school roof, there were things she'd buried deep inside that she'd never gotten the chance to talk to anyone about. It's not a regret she wants fulfilled...it's more like a chance to do what her shortened life hadn't allowed for.]

And of course it's okay, I've always wanted a brother. [She pulls back from the hug, rubbing at her eyes and smiling sheepishly.] I'm not a very good big sister if I keep making you cry, though. This is...what, the third time already?

[He only shook his head and gave a soft, stuffy kind of snort as he reached up to pat her head.]

I haven't cried since I was six. [Since that day.] It was just long overdue. Don't worry about it, Minachan.

[It was a lot of things overdue. Things he never got to say to anyone that he probably should have. Not necessarily a regret, just that time had run out. He felt lighter for it, nonetheless. He rubbed his eyes as well, finally mustering the energy to push himself back onto his achy feet.]

You can make it up to me, though, by helping me get dinner going. I'm going to waste away. [His stomach even growled as if on cue.] Correction, I think I might be dying.

[Except he said it in the most deadpan tone he could muster after the post-crying session.]

[Getting headpats when she's been declared the older sister feels like it shouldn't be allowed, but she's smaller than him and she likes headpats, so she won't stop him. Instead, she hums and stands up with him, giving his cheek a little pat. It feels nice and equal, an affectionate gesture in exchange for another.]

You're so silly.

[She grins and stifles a giggle at his tone, feeling lighthearted and content from his unique brand of playfulness after their heavy discussion. Granted, their shared past isn't the only thing she wants to talk with him about, not by far. It's manageable like this, though. Hearts opened and thoughts shared a little bit at a time, with feelings assuaged and soothed before they continue on with the rest of their day. Just like a Social Link, really. She wonders which Arcana she falls under for him.

She'll ask him another day. For now, she links their arms back together and marches them off into the forest for foraging.]

Come on then, you hungry hippo. Let's get you some food.

[He scrunched his nose a little at her cheek pat and words, but nothing more. There was definitely more that they can and should talk about, but there was only so much they could do at once before it was just too much. It was easier to share a little at a time, when they were ready to share. Today was merely the beginning. A new social link with his other self, who would have thought?

He let her take the lead into the forest, eyes peeled for any of the oddities that were bound to be found on the forest floor or up in the trees. Although without his shoes, he probably shouldn't be doing any climbing.]

I haven't played that game in years. [A beat.] Are you calling me fat?
