Chapter 06: Act I

FRANKENHYDE: ACT I—

§ instructions.

Frankenhyde Act I is underway! This is the designated log for all Main Scenes. Others are free to create their own toplevels for the Sub Quests, which are detailed below. Each Main Scene has their own unique toplevel and those cast into the roles are to thread their scene under each. All scene instructions are provided in the toplevels.

A few reminders. The city's setting is steampunk themed, so while for the most part it follows ye old Victorian England style, you have a lot of Industrial accents and odd machines about, including small airships. There is a river, so ports and docks are available but although this place may seem large, it's actually a finite space. Sailing down the river will be an endless loop back to the start with fog being the only visible "boundary." Passing through this fog will them back to where they were. There are also numerous research labs and other buildings, but many of them are locked or sealed behind an invisible barrier so no one can enter. The "locals" are all blots, so they are more like living puppets that will have minimum response to anyone who tries to interact with them. Most are neutral, but will attack if provoked. There are also some that are immediately hostile, and are differentiated by the sparks of electricity they generate around their bodies. The "safe zone" for this campaign will be a designated apartment building. Everyone can either bunk together or choose their own room.

Finally, just to be clear, characters who are assigned roles will know beforehand and can either communicate with their partner beforehand or just wait until they're in the scene. To get to their scene, characters must enter a specially marked door in the apartment building to be transported into their scene. They will automatically return upon completion (or if something goes horribly horribly wrong). Threading all of that isn't necessary, but it's to help give a better idea that characters can take a break between scenes or wait a bit to help with other things like the Sub Quests.

Feel free to refer to the Game Notes for more detailed info as well as ask questions or clarifications.

§ sub quests.

Everyone is free to participate in the Sub Quests. There are no specific top levels, so you're free to incorporate them however you wish in your own top level.

¶ I. Help the Scientists. A lot of work needs to be done to help the research experiments be a success, some of it a bit more unsavory than the rest.

  1. Gather Ingredients. There are a lot of things that go into creating life, so cue the fetch quest. Items range from organs from wildlife to various plants and herbs to tools such as thread, needles, and large bolts. These items can be found throughout the town and outside of the forest and can be left at either of the buildings that is set for Frankenstein's and Jekyll's laboratories. Do note that no one except those who are cast for the scenes can go inside (there is an impenetrable barrier that will shock anyone who tries to enter).

  2. Bzzzzt. The scientists also need to generate a lot of electricity. Outside each laboratory are various generators used to harness and conduct electricity: lightning rods that can be attached anywhere, strange boxes that need to be powered, and even an odd looking metal ball that can be opened to physically capture lightning. Just be careful to not get shocked!

¶ II. Help the Locals. Like most damaged stories, the local townspeople are not real but Blots taking the form of the original residents. Most are friendly and continue about their lives without paying much attention to the Aspect and providing basic assistance or keeping out of their way. They do not speak but seem to understand if communicated to.

  1. Science Fair. There is a local science fair being held that anyone can participate in! Rewards...aren't that great, but it's the experience that matters. But as expected, things don't go smoothly as various experiments and projects go awry. With the technology as it is, this can be even more dangerous as more than one is dealing with explosive fuel or have way out-of-the-box inventions such as flying motorized bikes or small automaton of some kind.

  2. Dangerous Blots. There are some blots who are badly damaged by Erasers and are more prone to attack. Those that have small electric sparks around them will have jerky movements and must be subdued or destroyed. There are also real Erasers lurking about, taking the form of unidentifiable homunculus and small chimera.

¶ III. Trick-or-Treat! It seems everyone came in time for Halloween. Although not quite as festive as current day, the children still participate in some lighthearted trick-or-treating. The Aspects are free to participate either in wearing costumes, doling out candy, or playing tricks, but they will want to keep an eye out. Some of these costumes appear too good, and some unfortunate accidents and incidents will reveal odd mutant experiments have escaped and mingled with the crowds. Most are not hostile and just cause accidents and disturbances, so they can be gathered and returned to the various research labs. Others may prove a bit more "bite-y" so more force may be necessary to subdue them.

¶ IV. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt!

Long story. But is this a good or bad time to say that I've only handled the crossbow a handful of times?

[And usually as a tool to fire something off into the distance? But okay he gets the idea.

Assuming Yu meant to fire now, he just looks over the weapon more time, skids into a halt, aims somewhere AWAY from the person and towards the giant mass of plant (at least it's a huge target), and pulls the trigger!

He is also stumbling back a little because was not expecting kickback or the loud noise.]

Handful is better than none!

[The gun goes off and Yu can't help but flinch, the noise piercing his ears.

It does seem to deter the plant somewhat as it looks at both of them, but it does mean - the plant is looking at the both of them. Okay um hmmm...would it be cheating if he makes his Zeus staff appear? Is anyone keeping tabs on that?

Better safe than sorry...he just moves a bit into a darker area of the corridor and pulls it out like if he found it laying on the side of a wall.

Time to play wack some leaves with it.]

I'll distract it!

[Can't say he's a fan of the gun but he doesn't have a choice in the moment.

...And where'd he get—WHATEVER GOT A GIANT PLANT TO DEAL WITH.]

Got it!

[So he should try to fire another shot right? ...Away from both guys. But he should also probably try and help the dude that's stuck, huh. As Eugene wildly fires another shot towards it's...head??? He can't help but wonder if he could do more to help. He's thinking similarly as Yu, wondering if he could use his mirrors. But he'll wait to see how Yu handles things before getting too crazy.

If only he could find a good frying pan—]

[He handles the staff more like a sword than something to bonk things with at it comes down on some of the plant's...tentacles(?!) for lack of better words. Eugene might notice a small, if brief flash of lightning as the staff strikes down, and the plant screeches before moving away.

It begins to loosen its grip on the man to concentrate on attacking Yu.]

Utterson!

[Your turn.]

[Who—oh right him!]

On it!

[Eugene fires one last shot, however it really is his last shot. He has learned the hard way that this thing has a very short supply of ammo, but whatever, he didn't really like the thing all that much. He tries to make his way to the man, but has to narrowly dodge and roll as a plant vine tentacle thing (????) lashes out at him. Desperately he looks around and—

AH HA.

There, glistening in the light like a sign from the heavens is storefront whose window has broken in. And in the display are the most beautiful weapons he had ever seen.

Making a quick dash to the store, he grabs the item, feeling the hefty iron and steel in his grasp, and when another tentacle vine comes his way—

CLANG!

That is the glorious sound of a wrought iron frying pan slamming into the plant and leaving a discernible bruise. He then smacks his way to the vine holding the man captive and one more powerful swing makes the plant screech as it completely loosens its hold on the man, freeing him. After Eugene helps him up so that the man can escape, he twirls the pan in his hand.]

Hah! I knew I loved these things for a reason!

[It's too bad his sweet victory will be short-lived.]

izanyagi: IYO MADE THIS AS A PRESENT. DNS (Oh my gaaawd)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-21 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, that brought Yu visions of a certain punk friend who would smack things with desks, chairs and mirrors. Yu resisted the urge to clap, instead continuing to use his staff more like a cattle prod at this point, sending brief bolts of electrical shock into the creature.

The 'man' began to run away, but that left them with one angry man-eating plant and two very delicious people standing in front of it.]

Be careful!

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-21 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, I got this!

[Hey now, he's not like some angry blond guy who likes to throw vending machines! Just the frying pan. But although Eugene is able to keep several at bay with his unconventional weapon, one of the tentacles grabs his leg and hoists him high up into the air.]

—All right, I retract my earlier statement!

[NOT THIS AGAIN]
izanyagi: (Nope.)

1/2

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-21 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
[...and they're back to the anime again.]
izanyagi: <user name=pixle> (Electrical Blade)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-21 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Well it's not a sword, but Yu tilts the staff on the side, hoping that the large bolt on top isn't just for show and might actually be sharp enough to cut a piece of tentacle.

Silently, and with a swift slice, he aims at the one holding Eugene up, sending a small bolt of electrical energy into it, just enough to cause pain but also not harm the other.]

[Disney + JRPG = hilarity.

The move is successful, the plant releasing another screech as it once again loosens its grip on its captured victim. Unfortunately Eugene had been too busy flailing trying to smack the thing with the frying pan to really pay much notice, so when he suddenly finds himself free falling he lets out a yell of surprise—

And then land oh so gracefully onto his face.

Not to worry, he has surprising stamina and high pain threshold(???) so with a groan he pulls himself up.]

Thanks... But how are we supposed to take this thing down??

[Although a little charred in some places, Audrey Mr. Plant here seems angrier and just as lively.]
izanyagi: (Well uhh...)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-21 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Yu has an idea. For the record, this may be a stupid idea, but after the gun in pocket trick, he has to wonder...he moves a little closer to him, whispering;]

What's your powers?
smolders: (☸ 190)

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-21 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Eugene is confused for a moment before he realizes what he means and quietly answers:]

Magic mirror. So far all I've figured out I can make mirrors and walk through them.
izanyagi: (Well excuuuuuse me princess)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-21 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[HMMMM...

Wait give him a second to prod the plant again with his electrical stick to give him time to think.]

Can you smash to mirrors together to make the shards fall on it? Or maybe we can reflect light from somewhere. I think if we give the story a line to follow, we can turn it into its weakness.
smolders: (☸ 189)

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-21 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hastily smacking a small root.]

I could probably do both. I'll try and reflect light—might be able to blind it...wait, it's a plant. Burn it maybe?? [....Huh.] If you can actually conjure lightning, I know my mirrors can reflect those.

Then I could try making those shards to fall on it to try and dice it.
izanyagi: (Default)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-21 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. Follow my lead.

[Cause it's gonna get stupid.]

It's strong...[he looks up at the dark sky] but the cold front means we might get lucky with a lightning strike tonight...if we have something that can get the lightning on it. And uh...

[Here it comes...]

You were a magician before right? I remember your mirror tricks. Perhaps if you still have them on hand we might be able to direct it right to the plant...

[HE'S SO SORRY.]
smolders: (☸ 030)

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-22 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Improv? He can totally do that. Kind of. Although it's a bit of an odd start, Eugene just goes with it.]

They were more than just tricks I'll have you know, and I never leave home without a few.

[As if playing a sleight of a hand, he reaches into his jacket as if pulling one out when in reality he's summoning them. He pulls out a large mirror, one that he can hold easily with two hands but would be seemingly impossible to fit without notice. But that's the beauty of magic!] This should be enough.

[And then a subtle nod to Yu. Do your thing, bro.]
izanyagi: (Default)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-22 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Okay now Yu claps. Briefly.]

Ahh! I'm glad you do, and what good timing.

[He looks up at the gathering clouds. He should be able to do it, he thinks...]

I think there might be lightning right about...now!

[The warning is very short, as thunder strikes down with the light, perhaps a little slower than usual, as if waiting for something else to be there...]
smolders: (☸ 169)

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-22 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Behold, the power of mirrors!

[...Worst line. But whatever, he holds up the mirror just in time for it to catch the lightning bolt. It reflects off the mirror's surface, Eugene wincing a bit from being so close to such a strong surge of electricity, before it's redirected to the plant to score a direct, charring hit!]
izanyagi: (Just as planned)

Warning the link includes an exploding dead whale lol

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-22 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[None of this makes sense in the story but that's play because they about to make fried plant. The lightning seems to have been charged enough by the mirror to somehow reflect even stronger, causing most of it's large tentacles turning to dust from the light and electricity.

Smells like black tea, hilariously enough.]

Looks like the fates were on our side tonight!

[Yeah it's not like either of them 'cheated'. He looks up at the sky again.]

I think another is coming!

[Let's blow this thing up. How bad could it be?]
smolders: (☸ 243)

WHY

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-22 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
[It could have been a fancy research prototype, the Storyteller will surely be able to figure something out.

After doing a quick check on the mirror and impressed that it hasn't suffered any damage, Eugene readies it again like a shield.]

On it!

[And when the lightning strikes, he'll once again aim it to reflect at the plant, this time hoping to aim at the main body.]
izanyagi: Doujin scan by <user name=pixle> (NOPE.AVI)

For this tag haha

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-22 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Much like the first strike, it tears into the creature, but this time, having touched it's...vital organs (??? would that count in plants? he's not sure. Does science really matter?) the entire plant goes up in a large explosion, slowly sending pieces of the creature all around them, landing on them and their costumes.]

Disgusting.

[Yu flicks at one of them on his shoulder. But it appears to be 'defeated' at least.]

I think we've taken care of the situation.
smolders: (☸ 133)

/crying into hands

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-22 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
[HAH! Eugene gets to cheat by using the mirror to help deflect some of the carnage...but some still gets on him, anyway. Ugh...gross... It was just a plant but why does it seem more...fleshy.]

I should hope so as I do not want to have to do that again. [Remembering the storyline, he looks at Yu.] But where did it come from? Someone's experiment gone wrong?
izanyagi: Doujin scan by <user name=pixle> | Please PM before taking! (Hell no)

>B] (I'd say I'm sorry but that would be a lie)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2020-11-22 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods, not even all that fazed, considering.]

That's right. I have a feeling this might be the work of Victor. We need to go to his place, as quickly as our feet will take us.

[And certainly not notice the tiny but of plant that is managing to get away. Honestly with everything everywhere it would be hard to see.]
smolders: (☸ 093)

/i will remember this/ B||||

[personal profile] smolders 2020-11-22 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Victor's, huh? Hate to leave the clean up to someone else—[Not really, he really doesn't mind it at all.]—but you're right, we should go. Lead the way, Clerval!

[Indeed, that little bit of plant will burrow underground with everyone completely unaware until it makes its reappearance in the future......]
