Chapter 06: Act I

FRANKENHYDE: ACT I—

§ instructions.

Frankenhyde Act I is underway! This is the designated log for all Main Scenes. Others are free to create their own toplevels for the Sub Quests, which are detailed below. Each Main Scene has their own unique toplevel and those cast into the roles are to thread their scene under each. All scene instructions are provided in the toplevels.

A few reminders. The city's setting is steampunk themed, so while for the most part it follows ye old Victorian England style, you have a lot of Industrial accents and odd machines about, including small airships. There is a river, so ports and docks are available but although this place may seem large, it's actually a finite space. Sailing down the river will be an endless loop back to the start with fog being the only visible "boundary." Passing through this fog will them back to where they were. There are also numerous research labs and other buildings, but many of them are locked or sealed behind an invisible barrier so no one can enter. The "locals" are all blots, so they are more like living puppets that will have minimum response to anyone who tries to interact with them. Most are neutral, but will attack if provoked. There are also some that are immediately hostile, and are differentiated by the sparks of electricity they generate around their bodies. The "safe zone" for this campaign will be a designated apartment building. Everyone can either bunk together or choose their own room.

Finally, just to be clear, characters who are assigned roles will know beforehand and can either communicate with their partner beforehand or just wait until they're in the scene. To get to their scene, characters must enter a specially marked door in the apartment building to be transported into their scene. They will automatically return upon completion (or if something goes horribly horribly wrong). Threading all of that isn't necessary, but it's to help give a better idea that characters can take a break between scenes or wait a bit to help with other things like the Sub Quests.

Feel free to refer to the Game Notes for more detailed info as well as ask questions or clarifications.

§ sub quests.

Everyone is free to participate in the Sub Quests. There are no specific top levels, so you're free to incorporate them however you wish in your own top level.

¶ I. Help the Scientists. A lot of work needs to be done to help the research experiments be a success, some of it a bit more unsavory than the rest.

  1. Gather Ingredients. There are a lot of things that go into creating life, so cue the fetch quest. Items range from organs from wildlife to various plants and herbs to tools such as thread, needles, and large bolts. These items can be found throughout the town and outside of the forest and can be left at either of the buildings that is set for Frankenstein's and Jekyll's laboratories. Do note that no one except those who are cast for the scenes can go inside (there is an impenetrable barrier that will shock anyone who tries to enter).

  2. Bzzzzt. The scientists also need to generate a lot of electricity. Outside each laboratory are various generators used to harness and conduct electricity: lightning rods that can be attached anywhere, strange boxes that need to be powered, and even an odd looking metal ball that can be opened to physically capture lightning. Just be careful to not get shocked!

¶ II. Help the Locals. Like most damaged stories, the local townspeople are not real but Blots taking the form of the original residents. Most are friendly and continue about their lives without paying much attention to the Aspect and providing basic assistance or keeping out of their way. They do not speak but seem to understand if communicated to.

  1. Science Fair. There is a local science fair being held that anyone can participate in! Rewards...aren't that great, but it's the experience that matters. But as expected, things don't go smoothly as various experiments and projects go awry. With the technology as it is, this can be even more dangerous as more than one is dealing with explosive fuel or have way out-of-the-box inventions such as flying motorized bikes or small automaton of some kind.

  2. Dangerous Blots. There are some blots who are badly damaged by Erasers and are more prone to attack. Those that have small electric sparks around them will have jerky movements and must be subdued or destroyed. There are also real Erasers lurking about, taking the form of unidentifiable homunculus and small chimera.

¶ III. Trick-or-Treat! It seems everyone came in time for Halloween. Although not quite as festive as current day, the children still participate in some lighthearted trick-or-treating. The Aspects are free to participate either in wearing costumes, doling out candy, or playing tricks, but they will want to keep an eye out. Some of these costumes appear too good, and some unfortunate accidents and incidents will reveal odd mutant experiments have escaped and mingled with the crowds. Most are not hostile and just cause accidents and disturbances, so they can be gathered and returned to the various research labs. Others may prove a bit more "bite-y" so more force may be necessary to subdue them.

¶ IV. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt!

steadypulse: (As I go on and do my thing)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-05 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
[The plate was slid in front of Karkat before 76 was going to a bowl that still had batter in it.]

Dig in, you have a fork.

[A yes, and he was taking up the pan again as the stove was turned back on, making sure it lit. Already going about making more flapjacks with the batter. A few at a time with the size of it.

Another drink of coffee from the mug.]
cancercarcino: (Please tell me that's grubsauce...!)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-05 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Karkat stares at the plate slid in front of him, then looks up at 76 again, and then back at the plate. This human was so weird... but another grumble of his stomach kept him from complaining too loudly.]

[With the piece of peach still speared on his fork, Karkat stabs the first pancake and tears off a piece, fangs baring as he opens his mouth and takes a bite.]

[Instantly, his eyes widen and he lets out a surprised noise.]

Holy fuck! This is fucking... fuck!

[He immediately goes to tear another piece off and shove it in his mouth.]
steadypulse: (A whole fucking year)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-05 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Figured he might as well feed the kid with the fact he was hungry. Language didn't bother him, even if the loudness got on the edge of it. Food would at least mean he was too busy eating to do too much of it.

Took a long drink from his mug, and took the few minutes after to re-fill it with coffee. By the time that was finished he could flip the flapjacks over to cook the other side.]

Good.

[Positive reaction at least.]
cancercarcino: (Pfffhahaha)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-05 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Positive reaction indeed. Karkat shovels a couple more chunks of flapjack into his mouth, monkey tail swishing eagerly, before he looks up at 76.]

What the actual fuck. I would have perforated my own bulge with a culling fork before ever giving you any sort of credit towards culinary expertise. Seriously, how the hell did you even manage this? Like, sure the grubcakes are missing the tang and meaty chunks of grub, but this is still fucking delicious! Clearly I have died and am now living in some sort of fucked-up afterlife of food nirvana. I don’t even think the goddamn Condesce ever ate food this good, holy shit. Who the hell taught you to cook, Troll Gordon Ramsay?
steadypulse: (I made my mistakes)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-05 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Always a lot of word to say so little-]

My mother.

[For the most part at least, he learned from watching her and picked up a few things from cooking shows. Some he used to watch on his phone, but beside the point. Really, it was too bad he couldn't use the zest of an orange for the batter now, but beside the point again.

Still, at least the kid was eating.]
cancercarcino: (Let me think about this...)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-06 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Mother?

[Karkat shoves another piece of flapjack in his mouth and chews as he mulls over the word.]

That's what you humans call adults who decide to stick around and play lusus rather than go off and... do whatever it is adult humans do, right? At least a "mother" makes sense, somewhat, if you consider it in context with a Mother Grub. Human mothers are the ones who brood human grubs or some shit, right?
steadypulse: (... Yeah)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-06 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Right.

[There was no need to go beyond that either.

This time he didn't put the flapjacks on to the plate all at once. No, this time he layered the whipped cream between each one. Made the stack look taller, and there was some sliced strawberries he put on top. Figured he might as well leave the peaches to the kid at this point.]
cancercarcino: (...that's it?)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-06 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Humans are so fucking weird. I mean, how you managed to become the dominant species on your planet is beyond me.

[He falls silent at that, choosing to instead finish the rest of the flapjacks on his plate. He saves the fruit for last, and is not above licking the syrup off of the plate. When he's done he lowers the plate and lets out a content sigh.]

Wow. I forgot how good grubcakes can be... kind of crazy what sort of shit you forget sometimes.
steadypulse: (Can't take it with you)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-12 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's life.

[Could very well answer both comments, and it sounded as if he were simply going to leave it at that.

He was. Stove was turned off again one he was done with his own stack, things set aside with minimal mess. Syrup and butter was all he'd done outside of the whipped cream between flapjacks. Already cutting in with a fork to enjoy his food.]
cancercarcino: (Huh?)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-13 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about you, but I severely doubt anything that's happened to any of us who've found our way trapped in this stupid wiggler-tale mudball of a planet to be anything even remotely resembling something as simple and normal as "life".

[He watches Jack as he digs into the stack of flapjacks, already kind of wanting more. But the stove's already been turned off, and he's not pathetic enough to beg for more food. Mostly.]

[Instead, his tail flicks, and he scratches at his neck as he looks at the other objects still on the table.]

...Do you have any more of those peaches?
steadypulse: (Doesn't it?)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-14 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Life isn't simple and normal, thinking like that's just naïve.

[He gestured towards the bowl, it still contained plenty of sugary syrup'd peaches in it.] Help yourself.

[Was fine with letting the kid have the rest of them, he'd already made what he'd wanted at this hour. Something that'd fill his stomach, taking advantage of what was on hand to do it, too.]
Edited 2020-11-14 07:53 (UTC)
cancercarcino: (And then there's THIS asshole)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-16 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
You think I don't know that, dunkass??

[He gets up when 76 gestures, moving to pick up the bowl of peaches. All the while he talks, arms moving animatedly as he does.]

Trust me when I say that I know that nothing is simple and normal is. In fact, I'm pretty sure the universe itself has written away on its grand scheme that is too far advanced and omniscient for anyone to possibly ever comprehend that certain individuals are just born to have the shittiest, stupidest fucking experience during their entire life, unlife, and afterlife. I mean, hell, paradox space is so wide and depressing half the time, it needs a couple laughingstocks to poke fun at, right? Why else have all these people who supposedly go about enjoying a "normal" life, and I don't think I even need to mime out the enclosure talons for you to see how full of sarcasm that term is.

[He takes a small break to spear one of the peaches and shove it in his mouth, briefly putting a hold on his rant to enjoy sugary peach goodness.]

We're just the ones who got the shittiest shit end of the shit stick.
steadypulse: (I made my mistakes)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-16 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Someone sounded like they needed a hug, and 76 was definitely not the one to deal with that.

He didn't say a word during the rant, just slowly eating his flapjacks as Karkat went on-]

You want another stack to go with your peaches.
cancercarcino: (It's like this...)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-16 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[He probably did need a hug. But just as 76 wasn't about to deal with that, Karkat isn't about to ask. Especially a really angry human who could quite literally throttle him if they had to get down to it. For now, the peaches are good.]

[He's got the fork halfway to his mouth when 76 speaks up, and Karkat looks up at him.]

Didn't you already put away the cooking stuff?
steadypulse: (As I go on and do my thing)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-17 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That matter, kid?

[It wasn't as if he'd cleaned anything and put it all away, just set things aside to be cleaned while turning off the stove. Hadn't quite used up all of the batter he'd made either. Still, didn't matter if the offer was turned down or not.

Was as much as he was willing to offer.]
cancercarcino: (Hell fucking NO)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-23 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well fuck me right up the nook for trying to be considerate of your old ass.

[But he does look at the bowls and pans, and his face twists into a pout.]

...Yeah, fuck it. Gimme some more grubcakes.
steadypulse: (Going to be seeing that soon)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-27 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't have offered if it bothered me, kid.

[A shrug of shoulders as he simply checked on the batter with a quick stir before he was turning on the stove and moving the pan back over the eye that lit up.]

... Thanks all the same. Most are considerate just to have something to bitch about or say they made the attempt.
cancercarcino: (Yeah like I'd believe that)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-11-30 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, most people are mouth-breathing jerk-wads obsessed with fondling their own horns out of a sense of self-entitlement. I may be an ass but I was at least taught basic manners.

[At least they can agree on that... mostly? Maybe.]

But yeah. If you're going to make more, sure. I'll take some more.
steadypulse: (Old as fuck and down to fuck)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-12-01 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Imagine having to coddle that for years in full grown adults to keep the peace.

[So there's reasons he doesn't always accept things at face value, a jaded sort of view on pretty much everything.

Yet there he was, already getting another batch started. Flipping the first of a few to finish cooking on it's other side.]
cancercarcino: (Hell fucking NO)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-12-07 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Bluh. Are you telling me human highblood society full of pompous assholes? Of course that bullshit managed to seep its way into your species. I bet it was probably Eridan, or Equius. Can't let the fucking highblood propaganda die, could they? Fuck, I swear, those two still manage to piss me off even after being dead for, fuck, how long have I been here? Not like time even matters right now, does it?

[He's kind of just ranting to himself, his monkey tail flicking in annoyance. He does eventually pause his ranting long enough to watch 76's movements, and watch him flip those pancakes.]
steadypulse: (Keeps on going)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-12-08 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
[76 was only half listening, enough to catch names and important enough details out of pure habit-]

More or less, need their asses kissed the right way to keep a war from happening. Or to get them to allow someone in to help the people they hold power over. [Always irritated him, how powerless the position really was at the end of the day. All of the red tape and road blocks just to help people, help the world, to just... live a life that was even just safe and comfortable enough for all steps of life.

Was it even worth it in the end to have fought so hard for that?]
cancercarcino: (Let me think about this...)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-12-08 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Sounds like highblood politics, only with a lot less indiscriminate murder involved.

[Guess humans also had stupid politics they dealt with. He sighs, crossing his arms.]

[For a moment the only thing that breaks the silence is the sound of sizzling batter and cooking action. Then, after a moment, Karkat speaks up.]

Is it... stupid to actually miss that shit? Like, miss someone or something you actively hate, or someone you know was fucking stupid and got exactly what was coming to him? If only to be reminded of some semblance of what once used to pass as normalcy in your sad excuse of a life?
steadypulse: (Going to be seeing that soon)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-12-18 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Stupid, yes. [There was that stack, being built up the exact same way as the first.

Soon enough it was slid in front of Karkat before he could speak- perhaps very surprisingly so.]

A lot of what anyone thinks or feels is stupid, and it can't be helped. It's stupidly natural, a long with other shit that we can't do anything about. Part of being alive, for better or worse.

So, stupid but not something to judge yourself for or beat yourself up about. More so if it's part of missing what passed for normalcy.
cancercarcino: (Just keep on going on)

[personal profile] cancercarcino 2020-12-20 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Karkat looks up sharply and looks about ready to retort some way, but then 76 keeps talking. He closes his mouth with a clack of his teeth and listens, and though he still has his usual scowl on his face, it's clear he's at least feeling... somewhat validated by those words.]

[He eyes the stack of pancakes as they're slid in front of him, and he takes them readily.]

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only idiot here who misses the stupidity that he'd come from, if only because it's different from the stupidity I'm used to.
