Chapter 02: Act I
Tale of the Bamboo Cutter: Act I—
§ instructions.
The first Act of our second campaign is underway! This is the designated log for all Main Scenes. Others are free to create their own toplevels for the Sub Quests, which are detailed below. Each Main Scene has their own unique toplevel and those cast into the roles are to thread their scene under each. All scene instructions are provided in the toplevels. Finally, it is okay to assume that a base camp of sorts is made in that central location. Like the Sub Quests, there is no specific toplevel for it, but players are free to incorporate it in their own.
As a reminder, characters will find similar information and instruction within their journals so they won't go in blind. Also to note, all characters will have all their belongings within them as well as the additional supplies provided to them by the Storyteller. In addition, they will experience a general wardrobe change upon arriving into the Draft to match the general feudal Japanese aesthetic, but you don't have to be too strict about it. Characters in Main Scenes will have a second wardrobe change while acting the scene. Outfits will be provided in the prompts themselves, and these outfits will only be in affect during the scene. The moment they leave the setting area, they return to their other wardrobe.
Finally, just to be clear, characters who are in Main Scenes are not immediately dropped in to their location and will have to travel to the "setting location" and then return. Threading all of that isn't necessary, but it's to help give a better idea that characters can take a break between scenes or wait a bit to help with other things like the Sub Quests. So those on Prince Quests, they can wait a day or two before setting out, and after completing their journey, they can rest another day or two before going with Kaguya to be judged.
Feel free to refer to the Game Notes for more detailed info as well as ask questions or clarifications.
§ sub quests.
Everyone is free to participate in the Sub Quests. There are no specific toplevels, so you're free to incorporate them however you wish in your own top level.
¶ I. Base Camp. Help set up, clear out, and protect the central location so that it can be used for a base camp. No one knows how long they'll be here, but it's going to be a few days, perhaps weeks. Time passes strangely within stories, after all. Although the Storyteller's magic will help offer some basic protection, there are still dangers that lurk outside of the forest and the occasional Blot monster or Eraser may try to harass those waiting behind. There's at least plenty of camping supplies, from tents and tools to food and medicine.
¶ II. Find the Gold Nuggets and Precious Stones. Hidden within the stalks of bamboo are golden nuggets and precious stones. To find them, characters will have to find red lined bamboo to cut down. One would think that would be easy when everything is monochrome in color, but the red lines will also be very dull and subdue and obscured by everything else. As to why they must be found, they are actually used to help plant new bamboo stalks to help regrow the forest and bring back life and color to the world. Thus after finding them, clear a patch and plant them.
Note: each gold nugget will provide some small healing to any injured and will have an additional boost in purifying the ground upon planting. It's all right for characters to hold onto a few gold nuggets, but do not be greedy!
¶ III. Eliminate Threats. As said on the tin, this forest needs a lot of culling. Just beware, the Erasers and Blots are dangerous and draw upon the forms they've taken on—from traditional Japanese demons to wild, dangerous animals. As more threats are cleared, the easier it will be to restore the forest as well. Destroying the Erasers and Blots will automatically revive the portions they had been "haunting" and make it easier to replant the bamboo.

Perhaps it's meant to tempt us.
[Unless:]
Of course, perhaps whoever put it there thought we would assume it to be too good to be true and thus venture forth into danger— when in fact the true treasure was within our grasp the entire time!
[Needlessly complicated, mayhap, but certainly possible.]
Still... I think we ought to investigate further inland before we make any decisions regarding that particular trinket.
no subject
...That sounds way too complicated. [And annoying. Would anyone really go that far... Okay he could think of one person at least he would, but he doesn't want to think about that. So for now he'll just shrug.]
But checking the island sounds fine with me. If we don't find anything we can at least go back and look at it.
no subject
[There's something to be said for keeping someone guessing.]
Right you are— there's nothing to stop us from turning back, after all.
[He says that now.]
no subject
But you're the leader. So which way should we go?
[The forest looks...normal. Fairly thick, too. Who knows what could be lurking within its depths or what will come out to greet them in their search. But despite the potential dangers, Shizuo doesn't seem to afraid. If anything he'd just like to get through this with as little trouble and as quickly as possible.]
...Ah. And do you actually want me to treat you like a prince? [Might as well figure out how close to being "on script" this should be, especially since the last time he did this he definitely was off.]
no subject
[It's not an entirely unknown feeling to him, but it has been some time since he'd led certain friends across Orsterra in search of a book. By comparison, this particular adventure is on a much smaller scale.
He begins to walk towards the forest with purpose, a thoughtful frown pulling at his lips.]
This way— and no, I don't think that's entirely necessary. The story doesn't seem to demand it, and neither do I.
[He's no better or more important than anyone else.]
We're partners in this.
no subject
Works for me—wouldn't really know how to treat you as a prince, anyway... [The worst squire.
But no sooner have they walked a few feet in that a loud rustling sound can be heard from overhead, the treetops swaying despite the little amount of wind there is.]
no subject
[His answer is equal parts cheerful and honest, but that rustling distracts him from any further conversation, as well— he freezes momentarily, looking up towards the forest canopy.
Should it be moving that much? That sound is familiar, as well; he's put in mind of some of the creatures he and his companions had encountered in the Woodlands.]
Perhaps we ought to be on our guard...
no subject
Just so you know... If we have to fight somethin', might wanna keep some distance from me. I don't use any weapons of my own, just my body and whatever I can grab. I also have this electric discharge, so don't want you to get zapped or somethin'.
no subject
[He cuts himself off before he repeats the word 'body,' opting to give a firm nod in response, dropping back just a few paces. He appreciates the warning, whatever questions he may have.]
Thank you. I shall take care to do just—
[This time, he's cut off by a tremor running through the ground beneath them. There's further rustling ahead, and one of the larger trees— thick-trunked with gnarled branches bearing knots that almost look like joints— begins to move towards them.
He clears his throat, lifting his chin as he reaches into his prince's jacket for his pipe, his other hand moving to unsheath the rapier at his hip.]
Ah, nature is indeed cruel, at times. Not to worry! We'll reduce this fiend to lumber!
no subject
Which is clearly about to be put to the test as he watches the tree move towards them. What is this, Lord of the Rings??]
Should I just try ripping it out if the ground?
[Dead serious. EXCEPT there's more than one. Although smaller, other trees around them start to rustle and move, roots ripping out of the ground.]
no subject
[He seems energetic about what's to come, at least— if nothing else, Shizuo has landed himself with a 'prince' who isn't likely to back away from a fight.]
Let's take care not to let them outnumber us too badly, shall we?
[Just in case.]
no subject
[Cyrus has a fair point—and it seems like he's ready to do this, so at least he doesn't have to worry too much about him. So he'll just roll his shoulders and cracks his knuckles, loosening up a bit.]
Guess I'll just try and knock them down and break 'em. Ready?
