Tortoise and the Hare Races Mini-Event

Tortoise and the Hare Races Mini-Event—

Amidst the sudden flurry of red hearts and sudden declarations of heartfelt confessions of love, there is a lot of fanfare and excitement about the newest carnival to roll through the Index. Inspired by the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare, denizens of that particular story have set up a special racetrack that runs around and through the carnival grounds. For those who are not feeling the love, this is an excellent chance to getaway for some real excitement as well as serve as a great distraction from the terrors that lurk just outside.

The "entrance" is really a curved ramp of the racetrack, the sound of racers zooming past and firing off various magical power-ups a thrilling greeting. To fit the theme, everyone is given an animal costume to wear—unless they are already part-animal. From there carnival goers are greeted with a strange mix of sounds and sights of a traditional carnival and high speed racetrack.

Of course, it's not just all fun and games. The Aspects will receive a brief message from the Storyteller, alerting them that the time is almost near for them to restore another Story. To help prepare, there are several items scattered through the carnival grounds that need to be found. These items will most certainly help aid them in the future, so the more they find, the better.

Good luck everyone!

§ instructions.
As mentioned in our Game Notes, this mini event is mostly for fun, but there is a Scavenger Hunt to help connect it to the upcoming campaign. To see the items and claim which one your character will find, refer to the Game Notes and sign-up! As a reminder, characters will have the necessary information within their journals. The information they have is roughly the same as what is written OOCly. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them on the linked Game Notes post.

§ prompts.

¶ I. Off to the Races. The main attraction is the giant racetrack that loops around, swerves through, and ramps over the entire carnival grounds; a truly amazing sigh. As is tradition, it's a 1-on-1 race with two cars, but there are a couple of variations of which type of race one can participate in. The cars are designed after the fabled Tortoise and Hare so hopefully everyone's costumes won't be too much of a hassle. Tortoise cars may be slower, but they pack a lot of firepower and benefit more from speed boosts. Hare cars, on the other hand, are fast but are more likely to spin out of control and have terrible fuel efficiency. Aim for the right power-ups to win!

  • A. Race to the Finish! The standard mode of racing! Compete against each other, use those power-ups, watch the speed ramps, and try to get into first place! But anything can happen while out on the track. Try not to spin out and Hares should watch their fuel. If anyone runs out of gas, they'll have to wait until the mushroom pit crew make their way to help!

  • B. Co-op Racing! In this mode, two people are in each car. One is the driver and the other is the "gunner." They focus on aiming whatever "weapon boosts" are on the track at their opponent. These are the following available boosts: mud ball, spider webbing, carrot missiles, pellet bombs, and the all powerful turtle shells and shooting stars. If the "ammo" hits the ground, they create a trap effect instead.

  • C. Bumper Cars. There is a smaller arena set where multiple Tortoise and Hare cars are designed more like bumper cars. Groups of people go in and try to score points by either bumping as many cars as they can, or by making other cars spin by shooting them with a special cannon. It's all in good fun, so have at it!

  • D. Through the Carnival! Someone probably saw this coming. Try as they might to make the track secure, the magic malfunctions and the cars are suddenly roaring through the carnival grounds! Even worse, because the cars are off the track they aren't responding properly. Racers have to do their best to try and avoid people while returning to the track. Carnival goers need to get out of the way or try to help the racers either stop completely or get back on the track.

¶ II. Special Games. There are some special noteworthy games at the carnival. There are certain items that will actually be useful for the next Story they will be visiting, and they can either be found while playing the game or be given as a unique prize. Everyone will have received a small note in the journals mentioning that they need to try and find certain items scattered through these games. Good luck!

  • A. Bamboo Ninja. Apparently run by the Huntsman Fan Club, the object of the game is to prove one's reflexes and skill (or lack thereof) with sharp pointy objects. More specifically, participants will be bombarded with shafts of bamboo and have to slice them in specific ways before they get bonked on the head! Bonus points are given for cutting along or close to the dotted lines drawn on the poles, and sometimes there'll be an extra prize inside! But if they miss and get hit three times, they're out!

  • B. The Golden Rabbit. There is an area with several large sandboxes, and they aren't for kids. Each sandbox has a three foot tall golden rabbit statue that has been broken into many pieces. Not only must one dig through the sand to find the pieces, but they must correctly assemble the rabbit within a certain time limit. Whoever completes their statue first or is the farthest by the time is up, wins! Good news is that contestants can bring in one partner to help, and the pieces themselves aren't too obscure and the pieces will fit with each other. Just a matter of digging deep and being able to put them together.

  • C. White Marble Maze. A co-op game, one person is to push a large, white ball through a giant maze while another sits above and instructs them through special communication headset gear. They are unable to see in front of them and will have to trust their partner to guide them. They must be careful, though. There are numerous (harmless) pits and traps, deadends, and even fake walls that could be used as shortcuts. Additionally, that special item might actually be in the maze, so if it's there they'll have to work to get to it. Teamwork is going to be key in this game.

¶ III. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt! This is where you can include other general carnival activities, like traditional game booths, food, general mingling, and more.

Oh, it's not enough for you?

[ So she needs to try harder does she? How to throw off his focus more while not ruining her own, hrm hrm hrm ... ]

Hey, hey! Rokurou~! What's ten times thirteen?

[ She doesn't know the answer herself and doesn't care. ]
rokubro: (‡ 207)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-10 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
[...oh my god what.]

The hell— Why are you throwing math into this??

[The sudden change almost got him. Almost but he managed to catch the bamboo stalk in time.]

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-10 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ CACKLE-- whoops she almost missed, gotta focus! Never mind that she's still sticking with the language switch, which is in turn making the organizers squint at them, but whatever man. ]

You wanted better, so I gave you better! Did you need me to go easier on you?
rokubro: (‡ 032)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-10 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Gr. Two can play at this game.]

I was expecting something different. But if you're going to do that, now it's my turn! Have you ever seen the insides of a monster after being cut and half and turned inside out from the sheer force of the attack? Well—

[Musashi, unless you want to be grossed out beyond belief, don't let him continue why is he like this]
fifthforce: (pic#12891950)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-11 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ oh my god rokurou ]

I'll pass, thanks!! I've seen things close to that, I don't need a rundown!

[ Ugh, her slashes are getting kind of sloppy. How dare this guy also be good at distractions! Rude! ]
rokubro: (‡ 017)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-11 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Worst not!twin.]

You sure? Usually all the guts and organs spill out, but there was once where everything just seemed determined to hang in there—

[He's a wicked daemon that's for sure.]
fifthforce: (pic#12891943)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-12 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ ABSOLUTE WORST NOT!TWIN ]

Ugh ... You know, you still didn't answer my question!!

[ no more guts, just tell her what 10 times 13 is, why is this backfiring on her so hard, aaaaaa ]
rokubro: (‡ 044)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-12 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
But I haven't even gotten to the good part about the head and all its brains leaking out!

[Yeah he kind of forgot what her math problem was. Also, speaking of heads, HEADS UP. One of the bamboo stalks had a hatchet still stuck to it (???) and Rokurou only notices it after he sliced through the bamboo, knocking it free.]
fifthforce: (pic#12891940)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
SAVE. IT.

[ You know!! For never!!

Wait holy crap HATCHET COMING HER WAY. Musashi panic-ducks midswing, just managing to get out of the way of the hatchet
. ]
fifthforce: (pic#12838346)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-13 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
[ She ends up staring at the hatchet as it hits the ground for a few seconds ... then turns and points one of her swords at Rokurou. ]

Hey! What's with the hatchet?! There's limits to how far distractions should go!

[ She hasn't even noticed that the stalk she panic-cut had a gold nugget in it. Not yet, anyway. ]
rokubro: (‡ 207)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-13 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Realizing what had just happened, he had turned to—find himself facing a sword.

Wow.]

Wait, you think I did that on purpose!? It was an accident!
fifthforce: (pic#12891938)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-14 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Really? ... Huh.

[ Yeah, she doesn't have any reason to think he'd go that far, and his reaction seems genuine. She blinks in surprise, then lowers her sword as she looks back at the hatchet again. ]

That was a really conveniently timed accident! Where did this thing come from then?
rokubro: (‡ 168)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-14 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
No idea, I didn't notice until it was too late. Maybe it was accidentally left in?

[Since the attendants had stopped throwing and are also talking amongst themselves, Rokurou steps over to pick up the hatchet.]

Hey, did someone leave thi—whoa!

[SUDDENLY GLOWING HATCHET?? Also upon closer inspection this thing looks kind of old and rusty...]
fifthforce: (pic#12891954)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ What the heck, why is it glowing? Musashi steps over to get a better look-- ]

... Is it supposed to do that?

[ --and proceeds to accidentally step on the gold nugget she dislodged and nearly falling over. She just barely manages to catch herself to avoid crashing into Rokurou or the hatchet, but geez, today is not her day it seems like. ]

rokubro: (‡ 011)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-19 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not su—whoa!

[And Musashi is tripping and while he normally would try to catch her, HE HAS A GLOWING HATCHET SO probably not the best idea. Instead he'll try and back up and keep the weapon out of the way, hoping she catches herself.]

You okay!?
fifthforce: (pic#12838357)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-21 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ Thankfully she catches herself in time, looking back at the ground to figure out what the hell she nearly killed herself on. ]

Y-Yeah, yeah, I'm fine! What even was that, anyway ...?

[ Aaaand spotting the gold nugget. Which she's quick to pick up and stare at. ]

Is this real? ... If this is seriously real, I'll totally forgive those guys for the whole hatchet thing.

[ "Those guys" being the event runners for this game. Not that suddenly finding this explains anything about why glowing is happening at all, but. Hey. ]
rokubro: (‡ 024)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-22 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Hatchet... Gold nugget... Glowing.... Wait a minute.]

Hey, wasn't there a list or something of stuff we should try and find?
fifthforce: (pic#12838348)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-24 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
A list?

[ A moment of confusion, followed quickly by disappointment that she then quickly tries to mask with an awkward laugh. ]

... Ahhh, yeah, that list! Right, of course ... I think it said something about the item glowing if it's the right one, too.

[ Which, of course, the gold nugget she's holding is indeed glowing, just like the hatchet was. She stares at it for a few seconds with a somewhat serious expression, then-- ]

Do you think the Storyteller would get mad at me for selling it?
rokubro: (‡ 012)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-02-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
...I don't know about mad, but you might get more money as a reward if you don't.

[Musashi please.]
fifthforce: (pic#12838350)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-02-27 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha ... Yeah, okay. You're probably right.

[ Fiiiiine, she won't sell it. No need to shoot herself in the foot like that. ]

So, we've now got a hatchet and a gold nugget ... but of equal importance, our game was interrupted! I have no idea which one of us was winning or what!

[ She probably could've remembered things like that if someone wasn't being SUPER GROSS-- ]
rokubro: (‡ 029)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-03-04 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
[She's a swordsman! She should be used to the gritty gore of their trade.]

Pretty sure it was me.

[Of course he'd say that.]
fifthforce: (pic#12838353)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-03-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ She is! But she's never seen something as bad as what Rokurou described. She's neater with her kills than that! But Rokurou claiming the victory gets a laugh. ]

Maybe it was! ... But I was thinking it was me.
rokubro: (‡ 032)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-03-05 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly we need a rematch.
fifthforce: (pic#12891929)

[personal profile] fifthforce 2019-03-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I guess we have no choice, huh? Doesn't seem like they've got a lot of bamboo left, though. I wonder how we could do this instead ...

[ She's lazily twirling one of her swords in her hand. ... There's also plenty of bamboo left. ]
rokubro: (‡ 092)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-03-06 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
[...Uh huh. He just grins.]

You know, I never did say anything about you getting your swords. Weren't you supposed to tell me when you got them?
