Tortoise and the Hare Races Mini-Event
Tortoise and the Hare Races Mini-Event—
§ instructions.
As mentioned in our Game Notes, this mini event is mostly for fun, but there is a Scavenger Hunt to help connect it to the upcoming campaign. To see the items and claim which one your character will find, refer to the Game Notes and sign-up! As a reminder, characters will have the necessary information within their journals. The information they have is roughly the same as what is written OOCly. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them on the linked Game Notes post.
§ prompts.
¶ I. Off to the Races. The main attraction is the giant racetrack that loops around, swerves through, and ramps over the entire carnival grounds; a truly amazing sigh. As is tradition, it's a 1-on-1 race with two cars, but there are a couple of variations of which type of race one can participate in. The cars are designed after the fabled Tortoise and Hare so hopefully everyone's costumes won't be too much of a hassle. Tortoise cars may be slower, but they pack a lot of firepower and benefit more from speed boosts. Hare cars, on the other hand, are fast but are more likely to spin out of control and have terrible fuel efficiency. Aim for the right power-ups to win!
¶ II. Special Games. There are some special noteworthy games at the carnival. There are certain items that will actually be useful for the next Story they will be visiting, and they can either be found while playing the game or be given as a unique prize. Everyone will have received a small note in the journals mentioning that they need to try and find certain items scattered through these games. Good luck!
Amidst the sudden flurry of red hearts and sudden declarations of heartfelt confessions of love, there is a lot of fanfare and excitement about the newest carnival to roll through the Index. Inspired by the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare, denizens of that particular story have set up a special racetrack that runs around and through the carnival grounds. For those who are not feeling the love, this is an excellent chance to getaway for some real excitement as well as serve as a great distraction from the terrors that lurk just outside.
The "entrance" is really a curved ramp of the racetrack, the sound of racers zooming past and firing off various magical power-ups a thrilling greeting. To fit the theme, everyone is given an animal costume to wear—unless they are already part-animal. From there carnival goers are greeted with a strange mix of sounds and sights of a traditional carnival and high speed racetrack.
Of course, it's not just all fun and games. The Aspects will receive a brief message from the Storyteller, alerting them that the time is almost near for them to restore another Story. To help prepare, there are several items scattered through the carnival grounds that need to be found. These items will most certainly help aid them in the future, so the more they find, the better.
Good luck everyone!

§ prompts.

- A. Race to the Finish! The standard mode of racing! Compete against each other, use those power-ups, watch the speed ramps, and try to get into first place! But anything can happen while out on the track. Try not to spin out and Hares should watch their fuel. If anyone runs out of gas, they'll have to wait until the mushroom pit crew make their way to help!
- B. Co-op Racing! In this mode, two people are in each car. One is the driver and the other is the "gunner." They focus on aiming whatever "weapon boosts" are on the track at their opponent. These are the following available boosts: mud ball, spider webbing, carrot missiles, pellet bombs, and the all powerful turtle shells and shooting stars. If the "ammo" hits the ground, they create a trap effect instead.
- C. Bumper Cars. There is a smaller arena set where multiple Tortoise and Hare cars are designed more like bumper cars. Groups of people go in and try to score points by either bumping as many cars as they can, or by making other cars spin by shooting them with a special cannon. It's all in good fun, so have at it!
- D. Through the Carnival! Someone probably saw this coming. Try as they might to make the track secure, the magic malfunctions and the cars are suddenly roaring through the carnival grounds! Even worse, because the cars are off the track they aren't responding properly. Racers have to do their best to try and avoid people while returning to the track. Carnival goers need to get out of the way or try to help the racers either stop completely or get back on the track.

- A. Bamboo Ninja. Apparently run by the Huntsman Fan Club, the object of the game is to prove one's reflexes and skill (or lack thereof) with sharp pointy objects. More specifically, participants will be bombarded with shafts of bamboo and have to slice them in specific ways before they get bonked on the head! Bonus points are given for cutting along or close to the dotted lines drawn on the poles, and sometimes there'll be an extra prize inside! But if they miss and get hit three times, they're out!
- B. The Golden Rabbit. There is an area with several large sandboxes, and they aren't for kids. Each sandbox has a three foot tall golden rabbit statue that has been broken into many pieces. Not only must one dig through the sand to find the pieces, but they must correctly assemble the rabbit within a certain time limit. Whoever completes their statue first or is the farthest by the time is up, wins! Good news is that contestants can bring in one partner to help, and the pieces themselves aren't too obscure and the pieces will fit with each other. Just a matter of digging deep and being able to put them together.
- C. White Marble Maze. A co-op game, one person is to push a large, white ball through a giant maze while another sits above and instructs them through special communication headset gear. They are unable to see in front of them and will have to trust their partner to guide them. They must be careful, though. There are numerous (harmless) pits and traps, deadends, and even fake walls that could be used as shortcuts. Additionally, that special item might actually be in the maze, so if it's there they'll have to work to get to it. Teamwork is going to be key in this game.
¶ III. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt! This is where you can include other general carnival activities, like traditional game booths, food, general mingling, and more.

A. Adventure Kart
[Finn's ended up rabbitting it up. Not only has he been stuffed into a rabbit costume, but he's also ended up choosing one of the hare cars to match that get-up. And he's excited for this! Before the race begins, he props his hands on his hips and looks around at any other racers.]
Y'all ready for this?
[Alternately, he could be paired up with someone for one of the two-person car races! Time to figure out which of them will take which rule and then get going!]
B. A Hare out of Place
[Things don't go entirely as planned, especially given how unwieldy the hare car can be. A few spin-outs send him careening off course and into the carnival grounds. He'll do his best to steer out of the way of any bystanders while calling out.]
Watch out!! [Are you a bystander, or another racer caught up in this offtrack madness?]
C. Bamboo-zled
[As he wanders the carnival grounds, this time as a pedestrian, his eye is immediately caught by the bamboo ninja game. He wields his sword (also made out of beanstalk) with a proud grin.]
Sweet! Now this looks like my kinda game!
D. Wildcard
[Feel free to come up with an alternate prompt, or hit me up for further plotting!]
b
The various games have caught her interest but the racing is something she merely stands by to watch. What she doesn't expect is for one of those carts to come veering off the track straight for her. Her first instinct is to jump up... on to the hood.
Hopefully Finn doesn't mind an accidental passenger. It does make communication easier. ]
Doesn't this thing have a brake?
no subject
A. Galra Ninja
[A sword... He's missed having one, since he was brought here weaponless. Lotor smiles as the bamboo-slicing blade is put into his hands. He likes the feeling of the hilt in his hands. He's used to training with his sword daily, and it feels natural to him.]
I will carry out the task.
[For all that he doesn't know much about playing, Lotor is all but vibrating with excitement over this game, since he gets to cut things with a sword.]
B. Child's Play
[Lotor is really enjoying the games. Especially the ones that involve shooting and throwing things. Because, with his natural Galra aptitudes, he's very good at them. He wants to win some prizes. Not because he wants them in and of themselves, but he wants the honor of having won them.
A small crowd gathers around him, but Lotor ignores them, since he has his eyes on the prize. He wins it, too. He ends up with a giant, pink stuffed axolotl. Which is... good, because he likes winning but he has no use for a large fake animal (what is it even for??), so he turns to a likely fellow carnival goer. Some people here must like these puffy objects, right?]
If you would like this, you can have it.
C. The Greatest Foods on Earth
[The array of foods on display in the stalls are bewildering to Lotor. He's used to eating mainly nutritional paste (and he's had some meat dishes, at odd intervals), so it's all new to him. He doesn't even know where to begin, or how much of it is suitable for Galra to eat. But at the same time, he's curious, and he wants to try it, leaning in closer.]
What are these?
[As there are a lot of things in front of him, he could mean any one of a number of food items for sale. Lotor may not be particularly outgoing, but he has no hesitation asking questions of anyone; the Galra prince has no reason to be shy.]
D. Foxes and Rabbits.
[For the task of digging out a rabbit, well—it's only natural that Lotor's new fox instincts should kick in, and he shifts into his fox form. His paws may be small, but he is a very quick digger, and he has a nose for those rabbit pieces...]
There's one over here—!
[When his fox instincts combine with his Galra competitiveness, it makes him very eager to win this game.]
B
[ Musashi's pretty puzzled as to why a kid - a kid with good aim at that, from what she just saw - would want to give away a prize to whoever happened to be nearby. Maybe he's embarrassed or something? Either way, she shakes her head, flashing a grin. ]
Come on, you don't really want to give that away, right? You just won it!
no subject
[He holds the thing out to her. She looks like one of the dominant species of this planet, like almost everyone here... So she is probably more likely to like the prizes of this world.]
I don't have any use for it.
[Why didn't they have a good prize? Like a weapon? But no, they all seem to be useless objects. Winning and proving his skills—those were what mattered.]
You can have it.
no subject
[ --have any use for it either. Hrm. It was kind of cute, but ... ]
Hey, if you don't like this ... whatever it's supposed to be, why not just exchange it for another prize or something?
[ That's what he means by "use for it", right? Kind of a weird kid. ]

That... looks like a carrot in a hot dog bun. Weird, it must be a play on a hotdog, but I've never seen a presentation like that before.
[No, she's not questioning the purple boy with animal parts. The reason WHY she's not questioning the boy with animal parts is because this is not the first time she's met one; the only difference is that Lotor is slightly younger and more purple.]
no subject
Well, it's best to be direct, if he's looking for information. He sees no shame in not knowing about these foods, and she does seem willing to answer his questions. So he asks some follow ups.]
What is a carrot? What is a bun? And what is—a hotdog?
no subject
Ah, well... a carrot is a root vegetable, usually orange but they can come in a few other colors too. And a bun is- well, I'm guessing you don't know what bread is then?

What's more surprising is the boy she's partnered with turns into a fox. If they really wanted to win this competition, she could become a wolf as well. She refrains for now but instead moves to where the boy indicates. ]
You dig that one up, I'll locate the next one. [ Like him, Velvet can easily pick out the scent of gold underneath the sand. ]
no subject
Well, he can't quite figure it out. He wants to win, regardless. That's what's most important. However—
As Lotor digs for the new piece, he can't help but "accidentally" send some sand spraying in her direction, kicked up by his fast-moving claws. He's not one for playing pranks at home (where he absolutely cannot get away with them), but it is a bit funny.]
no subject
Whether she senses the feelings of the little fox, Velvet still moves towards the next location of the gold statue and kneels down to dig.
However that all changes when he starts kicking up sand at her. She instantly stops and stands back up, moves to loom over him and crosses her arms over her chest. The look on her face is definitely one of disapproval. Velvet has a lot of practice being the disciplining mother-sister figure. ]
Are you done playing around? Or should I let the other team win?

» i-a. race to the finish! «
[So these race kart things....are definitely nothing he's ever seen before in his world, and it takes him a while to really figure it out. Also that he shouldn't press both pedals at once. It'll take him a bit to remember which does what, but after a few practice runs he feels sort of confident enough to try it. At least he's in the Tortoise tank car! ...Okay that's actually a little more aggravating.]
Ugh, I know this thing is supposed to be slow, but does it have to be this slow!? I can run faster!
[Needless to say, he's way behind. But okay, coming around a curve and he can sort of see the person in the Hare cart. Maybe if he runs over a power-up or something—]
WHOA!
[OH THAT WAS THE SPEED BOOST UH BYE??? Tortoise is about to zoom past the person ahead so watch out!]
[ ooc. can be altered to be co-op or even run amok through the carnival! ]
------
» i-c. bump bump bump «
[Okay, this is a little easier to handle...and probably going to release more of Rokurou's uh. Aggressive? Side.]
Heh, out of my way!
[WHABAM. He just sidelined another bumper car, his daemon eye flashing a bit as he grins over at the other drive, his points going up before he floors it to "zoom" off to go after his next victim. Yeah he's being a real road daemon now...]
------
» ii-a. slice slice baby «
[Now this is a game that he could spend all day at. ...Seriously he may just spend the rest of his time in this one game. Equipped with his own blades, he just smirks over at whoever is competing against him, his adrenaline already on the rise from excitement.]
I'm definitely going all out, so I can't promise anything, but I'll try to keep my halves on this side.
[And if we want to skip the small talk and just get right to it, Rokurou will be slicing and cutting through the bamboo with ease. In fact, he's going to request they go ahead and ramp it up from the start, chucking five, six, seven sticks of bamboo at him, all of which he'll slash through in one to three strikes.
Yeah someone is going to have to drag him away later.]

[ Speaking of which, drawing both of her swords now. And is way too pumped to be able to use them like this. But hey whatever, A CHALLENGE IS A CHALLENGE. ]
no subject
That's exactly what I wanna here. Let's show them what we got!
[ARE YOU READY KIDS?]
no subject
Yeah! Let's do it!
[ And boom, here comes the bamboo! Musashi's still in an excitable mood, but that's not really affecting her swings - for each shaft that gets hurled her way, she's cutting pretty damn close to the lines marked on them.
But sometimes she just decides to be a show off and use both blades to chop the bamboo up into a bunch of chunks. Or try to juggle pieces with multiple slashes to varying levels of success. But hey, she seems to be having fun at least, and isn't missing at all. ]

[Lotor says this in all seriousness. Because of course, if there's combat of any kind, Lotor isn't going to back down. He's a great Galra warrior, and he will vanquish his enemy! No matter the contest. Really, this doesn't seem so different from some of the combat trials he's been through.
Now that he finally has a sword in his hands again, his eyes are shining (well, they shine literally, but now they're shining emotionally as well). His fox ears twitch eagerly.]

Currently she has a stick of meat in one hand that she's devouring like the wolf she is. While Velvet has forgone the costume aspect, she actually isn't actively hiding her ears or tail like she would in the city. ]
So what happens if we find all of the items on that list? Do you think we earn a prize?
no subject
Honestly, I'm not sure. [While she has a stick of meat, he's having some funnel cake because why the hell not. ...This seems reversed somehow.] We've had to look for things in the last story we did, and I still have no idea what they were for. But I'm guessing there needed for something.
no subject
Nothing about this is wrong, Velvet's a Wolf and wolves eat meat. Rokurou eats whatever. And if she pinches a piece of his funnel cake, is he going to complain? ]
So we find them and just hold on to them, hoping we don't completely miss the opportunity they might be needed?
