Chapter 06: Act I

FRANKENHYDE: ACT I—

§ instructions.

Frankenhyde Act I is underway! This is the designated log for all Main Scenes. Others are free to create their own toplevels for the Sub Quests, which are detailed below. Each Main Scene has their own unique toplevel and those cast into the roles are to thread their scene under each. All scene instructions are provided in the toplevels.

A few reminders. The city's setting is steampunk themed, so while for the most part it follows ye old Victorian England style, you have a lot of Industrial accents and odd machines about, including small airships. There is a river, so ports and docks are available but although this place may seem large, it's actually a finite space. Sailing down the river will be an endless loop back to the start with fog being the only visible "boundary." Passing through this fog will them back to where they were. There are also numerous research labs and other buildings, but many of them are locked or sealed behind an invisible barrier so no one can enter. The "locals" are all blots, so they are more like living puppets that will have minimum response to anyone who tries to interact with them. Most are neutral, but will attack if provoked. There are also some that are immediately hostile, and are differentiated by the sparks of electricity they generate around their bodies. The "safe zone" for this campaign will be a designated apartment building. Everyone can either bunk together or choose their own room.

Finally, just to be clear, characters who are assigned roles will know beforehand and can either communicate with their partner beforehand or just wait until they're in the scene. To get to their scene, characters must enter a specially marked door in the apartment building to be transported into their scene. They will automatically return upon completion (or if something goes horribly horribly wrong). Threading all of that isn't necessary, but it's to help give a better idea that characters can take a break between scenes or wait a bit to help with other things like the Sub Quests.

Feel free to refer to the Game Notes for more detailed info as well as ask questions or clarifications.

§ sub quests.

Everyone is free to participate in the Sub Quests. There are no specific top levels, so you're free to incorporate them however you wish in your own top level.

¶ I. Help the Scientists. A lot of work needs to be done to help the research experiments be a success, some of it a bit more unsavory than the rest.

  1. Gather Ingredients. There are a lot of things that go into creating life, so cue the fetch quest. Items range from organs from wildlife to various plants and herbs to tools such as thread, needles, and large bolts. These items can be found throughout the town and outside of the forest and can be left at either of the buildings that is set for Frankenstein's and Jekyll's laboratories. Do note that no one except those who are cast for the scenes can go inside (there is an impenetrable barrier that will shock anyone who tries to enter).

  2. Bzzzzt. The scientists also need to generate a lot of electricity. Outside each laboratory are various generators used to harness and conduct electricity: lightning rods that can be attached anywhere, strange boxes that need to be powered, and even an odd looking metal ball that can be opened to physically capture lightning. Just be careful to not get shocked!

¶ II. Help the Locals. Like most damaged stories, the local townspeople are not real but Blots taking the form of the original residents. Most are friendly and continue about their lives without paying much attention to the Aspect and providing basic assistance or keeping out of their way. They do not speak but seem to understand if communicated to.

  1. Science Fair. There is a local science fair being held that anyone can participate in! Rewards...aren't that great, but it's the experience that matters. But as expected, things don't go smoothly as various experiments and projects go awry. With the technology as it is, this can be even more dangerous as more than one is dealing with explosive fuel or have way out-of-the-box inventions such as flying motorized bikes or small automaton of some kind.

  2. Dangerous Blots. There are some blots who are badly damaged by Erasers and are more prone to attack. Those that have small electric sparks around them will have jerky movements and must be subdued or destroyed. There are also real Erasers lurking about, taking the form of unidentifiable homunculus and small chimera.

¶ III. Trick-or-Treat! It seems everyone came in time for Halloween. Although not quite as festive as current day, the children still participate in some lighthearted trick-or-treating. The Aspects are free to participate either in wearing costumes, doling out candy, or playing tricks, but they will want to keep an eye out. Some of these costumes appear too good, and some unfortunate accidents and incidents will reveal odd mutant experiments have escaped and mingled with the crowds. Most are not hostile and just cause accidents and disturbances, so they can be gathered and returned to the various research labs. Others may prove a bit more "bite-y" so more force may be necessary to subdue them.

¶ IV. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt!

Um...

[ On one hand, he felt really bad about imposing. On the other...

God, it smelled so damn good, he was drooling. ]

If you're, y'know, sure... Thanks a lot, sir.

[ Junpei stepped more fully into the room, moving to take a seat--

Though he stopped, glancing back up at the chef-dude. ]

A-anything I can do to, help?

[ Not that he knew how to cook, but it felt impolite to not offer. ]
steadypulse: (Do you know how long this took?)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-29 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Easier to get a look at the guy when he stepped in at least. Still a kid-]

It's fine.

[Was just about done with the stack anyway. Turned the stove off and set the pan aside after siding off the last flapjack on top, already setting a mix of butter and whipped cream on top.]

Just take a seat.
blazeoflife: (All smiles)

[ He's not that much of a kid, thank you very much! He's 17, nearly a legal adult, mostly! ]

Well, uh, alright.

[ But really with that wide smile on his face, he probably does look pretty childlike, huh? ]

[ He sat down at the table, watching the man prep the food with curiousity and almost wonder-- wow, this guy really knew what he was doing. What was it with cranky guys knowing how to cook, huh? ]

It smells super good... Do you cook a lot, sir?

steadypulse: (Keeps on going)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-29 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
No.

[Topped with syrup? That stack of flapjacks was slid in front of Junpei along with a knife and fork.

Which meant 76 then went to cooking up another. He hadn't eaten yet, might as well go ahead and start over. Batter was still good and there was enough.]

Enough to keep fed.
blazeoflife: (Sweet~)

[personal profile] blazeoflife 2020-11-29 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
...Huh? But that means at least once a day, right?

[ It seems like the two of them had different ideas of what 'cooking a lot' meant. ]

[ But Junpei quickly shut up his questioning as the pancakes were slid infront of him, that look of delight just, unable to be hidden. ]

Itadakimasu!

[ And he dived right in, cutting a part of the stack and taking a bite-- ]

--MMmnnn! H-holy shit, this is so good!

[ The happiness he felt at that warm, delicious food was practically visable-- almost like flowers sprouting around him in the air. ]

You're an amazing cook, sir...!
steadypulse: (CAN THIS BE OVER NOW????)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-11-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not always, no.

[He didn't always... eat. Not recently at least, hunger a strange thing with the fact he could eat most things raw and come back with no ill affects. Sometimes it was just easier on him as well to not bother with a fire to cook with.

Still, it was said so easily and even toned that it nearly sounded perfectly normal.

76 was quiet for a moment as he watched the kid, shrugging a shoulder casually.]

Just remember to eat slow. Won't feel sickly stuffed that way.

[Was going about the same manner of 'construction' for his own stack of flapjacks.]
blazeoflife: (Sheepish smile)

[personal profile] blazeoflife 2020-11-30 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... is it like, an essence thing? Like how you could handle the poisoned stuff?

[ He's hoping the guy isn't starving himself... ]

If you're ever hungry, I got a bamboo thing at my place that makes some of the best ramen you'd ever taste-- you're more than welcome to have some, sir.

[ Especially after feeding him. Junpei cut into the stacks again, raising another bite up to his mouth when the old guy gave him a heads up--]

Right, I wanna savour this-- [ Hah, with that sort of voice, the way he cooks, and how he worries without trying to seem like he is... ]

...It's funny, you remind me of someone I know.
steadypulse: (YOU THOUGHT I WAS DONE)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-12-01 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
More or less.

[He was old, and trauma had caused a few bad habits to be picked up. Not the healthiest, but he'd had the body of an enhanced super soldier to coast along on. Whenever he couldn't afford to do something.

This Essence? More or less made it easier to forget a few things with far longer until he noticed any ill effects.

There was a grunt in reply at the offer, but it wasn't a turn down. Rather it was an acknowledgement, kept as a possibility. Second time he'd heard about the 'bamboo thing' as well. Something to look more in to he supposed.

Turned off the stove and gave everything he used a quick cleaning so he could set it to dry. Picked up his own plate of flapjacks so he could sit at the little table arrange there himself to eat. Glancing up for a moment, hand close to the lower half of the mask worn.]

That right.
blazeoflife: (Ehhhh...)

[personal profile] blazeoflife 2020-12-10 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
[ Should he look away to give the old guy privacy? He wouldn't wear the mask without a reason, after all...

Even though Junpei was totally curious. It was like, that one Ninja manga, with the teacher who wore a face mask all the time...

Still, Junpei glanced away, obviously trying to respect the other guy's needs to keep things hidden. ]

Yeah. Shinjiro-senpai-- he was... is? An upperclassman of mine.

[ Hence the 'senpai' bit. Junpei cut off another bite of pancakes, chewing it thoughtfully as he continued, glancing out the window. ]

...He and Akihiko, one of the other senpai at my dorm, were super close, even if they argued a lot. Hahha, when I first met him? Me and Minako and Yukari had all gone to this dangerous back alley in town to investigate a mystery--

[ He paused in his explanation, raising his fork up as if to point-- and nearly looking at the other guy-- only to look away again quickly. Privacy! Privaaacyyyy... ]

Not my idea, by the way-- Yukari had a stick up her ass cause I had teased her about bein' scared of a ghost story at school and she needed to prove me wrong by going into like, gang territory, but whatever-- I get punched, and then Shinjiro-senpai just like, SWHOOPS in! Headbutts the guy like it ain't no thing! Totally saved our asses. At the time it was super scary, but... like.

[ Pause. ]

I wanna say it's funny now but nah, it's still pretty freaky how close things got there, especially if Yukari and Minako would've gotten hurt-- Annnyway.

[ Back on topic! ]

He had the same power we did--Persona, right? Can summon stuff from our heads-- you probably saw that one detective dude talk about it on the journals, right? But didn't join us right away... not till Ken joined us in the summer. And he tried to barely talk at all to any of us...

[ Another bite-- ]

...He had a super gravely voice, like he hadn't talked in forever.. Tried to keep us all at arms length, you know? He was super strong and tough and knew how to fight-- but, like. Even if he didn't wanna know us, he still looked out for all of us...

[ Chew, chew... swallow... Waving his fork around a bit for emphasis]

...Minako even got him to cook for us a few times, and he was really good at it. It was the first homecooked meal I'd had in forever.

[ Which made you wonder about his homelife. ]

...But, looking back on it all now...

[ A pause, as Junpei's eyes seemed to focus on someone not there... ]

...I'm pretty sure, he had a death wish. An' him being all 'cool' and mature and shit... might have just been him trying to convince himself he was okay with dying.
steadypulse: (Really I didn't know what else to do)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-12-18 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[76 remained silent, eating slowly and sipping from his mug of coffee, but there was a slight tilt of his head to at least indicate he was listening. No just ignoring the kid going on long about a story. Picking up names along with it.

Grunted in acknowledgement abut Dojima's bringing up Personas on his journal post as well.

Hell of a place these people all seemed to come from, either the same world at different times or something along those lines. Kept silent a good while, made progress with his own stack even as those visor-like 'glasses' kept part of his face obscured, beard and mustache mostly covered the rest. Appreciated the fact there was no staring.

Another low grunt.]

We all deal with crap in our own way.
