Chapter 06: Act I

FRANKENHYDE: ACT I—

§ instructions.

Frankenhyde Act I is underway! This is the designated log for all Main Scenes. Others are free to create their own toplevels for the Sub Quests, which are detailed below. Each Main Scene has their own unique toplevel and those cast into the roles are to thread their scene under each. All scene instructions are provided in the toplevels.

A few reminders. The city's setting is steampunk themed, so while for the most part it follows ye old Victorian England style, you have a lot of Industrial accents and odd machines about, including small airships. There is a river, so ports and docks are available but although this place may seem large, it's actually a finite space. Sailing down the river will be an endless loop back to the start with fog being the only visible "boundary." Passing through this fog will them back to where they were. There are also numerous research labs and other buildings, but many of them are locked or sealed behind an invisible barrier so no one can enter. The "locals" are all blots, so they are more like living puppets that will have minimum response to anyone who tries to interact with them. Most are neutral, but will attack if provoked. There are also some that are immediately hostile, and are differentiated by the sparks of electricity they generate around their bodies. The "safe zone" for this campaign will be a designated apartment building. Everyone can either bunk together or choose their own room.

Finally, just to be clear, characters who are assigned roles will know beforehand and can either communicate with their partner beforehand or just wait until they're in the scene. To get to their scene, characters must enter a specially marked door in the apartment building to be transported into their scene. They will automatically return upon completion (or if something goes horribly horribly wrong). Threading all of that isn't necessary, but it's to help give a better idea that characters can take a break between scenes or wait a bit to help with other things like the Sub Quests.

Feel free to refer to the Game Notes for more detailed info as well as ask questions or clarifications.

§ sub quests.

Everyone is free to participate in the Sub Quests. There are no specific top levels, so you're free to incorporate them however you wish in your own top level.

¶ I. Help the Scientists. A lot of work needs to be done to help the research experiments be a success, some of it a bit more unsavory than the rest.

  1. Gather Ingredients. There are a lot of things that go into creating life, so cue the fetch quest. Items range from organs from wildlife to various plants and herbs to tools such as thread, needles, and large bolts. These items can be found throughout the town and outside of the forest and can be left at either of the buildings that is set for Frankenstein's and Jekyll's laboratories. Do note that no one except those who are cast for the scenes can go inside (there is an impenetrable barrier that will shock anyone who tries to enter).

  2. Bzzzzt. The scientists also need to generate a lot of electricity. Outside each laboratory are various generators used to harness and conduct electricity: lightning rods that can be attached anywhere, strange boxes that need to be powered, and even an odd looking metal ball that can be opened to physically capture lightning. Just be careful to not get shocked!

¶ II. Help the Locals. Like most damaged stories, the local townspeople are not real but Blots taking the form of the original residents. Most are friendly and continue about their lives without paying much attention to the Aspect and providing basic assistance or keeping out of their way. They do not speak but seem to understand if communicated to.

  1. Science Fair. There is a local science fair being held that anyone can participate in! Rewards...aren't that great, but it's the experience that matters. But as expected, things don't go smoothly as various experiments and projects go awry. With the technology as it is, this can be even more dangerous as more than one is dealing with explosive fuel or have way out-of-the-box inventions such as flying motorized bikes or small automaton of some kind.

  2. Dangerous Blots. There are some blots who are badly damaged by Erasers and are more prone to attack. Those that have small electric sparks around them will have jerky movements and must be subdued or destroyed. There are also real Erasers lurking about, taking the form of unidentifiable homunculus and small chimera.

¶ III. Trick-or-Treat! It seems everyone came in time for Halloween. Although not quite as festive as current day, the children still participate in some lighthearted trick-or-treating. The Aspects are free to participate either in wearing costumes, doling out candy, or playing tricks, but they will want to keep an eye out. Some of these costumes appear too good, and some unfortunate accidents and incidents will reveal odd mutant experiments have escaped and mingled with the crowds. Most are not hostile and just cause accidents and disturbances, so they can be gathered and returned to the various research labs. Others may prove a bit more "bite-y" so more force may be necessary to subdue them.

¶ IV. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt!

Kurt is also dressed for the era, same for now having a labcoat to play his part as the scientist, the one who surpassed simple research to actually create what they had sought to achieve. It's... a little strange, as Kurt has never wore anything like that before, let alone really done anything like this before, but he's at least just as optimistic as the character he's supposed to be playing here.

So, when he hears the door knock at the laboratory, Kurt opens the door with a friendly enough smile, ready to get into the scene here even if the other person is someone he doesn't know that well.

"Henry, there you are! I'm so glad that you could make it. Come in, won't you?"

He holds open the door to allow Yosuke entry, seeming none the wiser for the changes Yosuke is experiencing with his eyes. And even if he did, he hasn't met Yosuke and wouldn't know that he's not normally like that anyway.

“Thank you,” Yosuke stepped right in.

He didn’t see anything out of the ordinary but he supposed labs weren’t really meant to be out in the open. Hm, should he just go right out and ask? What would Yo- ah, what would Dr. Henry Jekyll do? He took the time to look around a little and think, shoving his hands into his pockets. “So... I heard you have something of a success recently.”

May as well not play coy. That wasn’t really in his nature anyway. His or Yosuke’s or Jekyll, he assumed. He wasn’t sure, neither of them read the story. Maybe partner did? Oh well!

“Exciting minds want to know, care to share?”

"Yes, of course! Please, right this way: it's best to see it with one's own eyes, after all."

Or at least, Kurt certainly thinks that would be what his character would do in this particular scenario: a scientist naturally wants to show off their success with a trusted friend as soon as possible, right? It's been... quite a long time since Kurt read this particular book, given that the story of Frankenstein didn't fit in with his usual preferred genre of adventure tales he enjoyed in the past.

So, he leads Yosuke to the room where Victor Frankenstein's creation awaits, and the room is about as dramatic as one can expect with it's scientific set up of fancy equipment (none of which Kurt himself actually knows how to use) and the table where something lies covered by a white sheet.

"Are you ready?"

It was interesting, wasn't it? Playing a part that you knew next to nothing of. How did actors do this? Well, he supposed they actually studied their parts. Tch, but that was so boring. It was so much more fun to wing it! Hah, wing it. He wondered if he should use any of the Horus abilities in this scene. What would that do?

He followed Kurt as he thought, but he was soon distracted by the fancy equipment and set up. It reminded him an awful lot like Naoto's dungeon. Ah, that's right, wasn't Frankenstein supposed to be a mad scientist for creating the monster?

"Sure, your audience awaits." He grinned.

Kurt grins back as well, still not noticing that there's anything off in the manner Yosuke does so. They are playing the roles of very questionable researchers and scientists, after all, so they're both giving their all here to show that, right?

And so, he decides to give this a more dramatic flourish as he grasps the cloth on the table to pull away.

"What you're about to see may perhaps be my greatest creation thus far... behold!"

Kurt pulls the sheet away to reveal Frankenstein's monster that lies beneath, trademark green and bolts screwed into it's neck. Despite the color of it's skin that may lead one to think that it's a corpse, the body doesn't appear to be rotting in the same way, and when prodded, it does make a groaning noise of annoyance. Their wrists and ankles are bolted to the table to prevent them from getting up and potentially decking either of them, at least?

Holy shit, it really was Frankenstein's monster! It was super gross up close too. Yosuke immediately got up close to it, poking and prodding it and laughing at the annoyed sounds it made. "It's really alive, holy shit."

What did that actually mean? This was supposed to be some story, right? But not only that but what was the monster even capable of? He got a suitable glare for his efforts from the monster, to which Yosuke only flicked at the bolt in its neck.

"What do you plan to do with it? Everyone in town's gonna hate it, y'know," Yosuke leaned against the table, ignoring the monster for the time being now. "'Course, you could just let it go. See what it'll do it the town. It's so small, so boring, after all."
