Chapter 07: Act III

SUGAR PLUM BEAST: ACT III—

There's a ruckus kicking up outside of the castle gates as mouse soldiers start to gather. The toys are on edge, watching warily from the windows and some already preparing for a battle...and unlike in the past, instead of drifting out of consciousness they will witness the changes occur in front of their very eyes, golden white text etching into the air as a bodiless voice narrates what has transpired.
The Toy Representative takes it upon himself to give Clarabelle a tour of the castle/factory, despite Clarabelle being incredibly unamused and cranky about the whole situation. On the tour, she's makes a bit of a nuisance of herself, ignoring warnings to stay out of the West Wing and causing general problems until the Representative is able to corral her and get her to behave.

The Sugar Plum Fairy hears that her charge is avoiding Clarabelle despite everything riding on him making nice with the girl and pops in for a visit. She points out that the Beast is simply running from his own emotions and that nothing will change if he closes his eyes to the truth. The Beast, in turn, points out that he doesn't feel as if he deserves Clarabelle's affections when he looks like this. The Fairy, patient and kind as always, eventually convinces him that he won't know if she likes him until he tries, and suggests that he learn her hobbies and to be honest with the girl.

A puppet, frustrated with how slow progress has been on breaking the curse, runs into one of the soft toys. The two get to gossiping and the soft toy pulls out a mirror he claims will help speed things along without requiring the Beast and Clarabelle get together. The puppet seems unsure, but the soft toy insists this is totally safe. When the puppet refuses again, the soft toy reveals himself to be the Mouse King. In a panic, the puppet breaks the magic mirror, sending shards flying; these shards turn into dark shadowy reflections of the Mouse King and the puppet. In the chaos, the puppet slips away, leaving the Mouse King to fight the reflections alone.

After meeting with the Fairy, the Beast arranges a meeting with Clarabelle, figuring that as the daughter of a toymaker she might know how to fix up the castle-turned-toy factory and make things a little nicer here. Clarabelle gets to the meeting room first, where she finds the music box that was meant to be her birthday present. Upon touching it, however, she activates an enchantment that forces her and later the Beast when he arrives to waltz and sing instead of talk. In between the steps and the notes, the two come to an understanding; Clarabelle agrees to stay for a while and help out, once the Beast explains that he is cursed to be here, and the Beast agrees to look into making Clarabelle another music box. The two part on good terms.

The Sugar Plum Fairy flies off after making sure that her little trick with the music box worked, only to run into the Mouse King skulking around after his run in with the reflections. She greets him and asks him what, exactly, he's doing here? The Mouse King says he was simply curious if this was Beast's castle and asks how the former Prince is handling his curse and what the Sugar Plum Fairy was doing here. The two begin to debate on what, exactly, the Beast should do; the Fairy wants him to break the curse and plans to help him with that, while the Mouse King thinks he should just get used to it all and move on with his life. The two eventually part, unable to reach any sort of middle ground.

Despite growing closer and becoming friends with the Beast, Clarabelle still misses her father. One day, the Beast brings a magic mirror to Clarabelle so that she may check up on her father. The mirror shows Drosselmeyer in bed, horribly ill and calling for his daughter. Without a moment's hesitation, the Beast tells Clarabelle she should go to her father and take one of the toy servants with her for help. Clarabelle kisses the Beast's cheek and thanks him before leaving to return to her home and her father.

Clarabelle arrives home to tend to her father, a little alpaca maid toy having accompanied her. "Drosselmeyer" is surprised to hear his daughter's voice; Clarabelle is surprised to see that her father isn't wearing his eyepatch and that he's covered the wrong eye. Instantly the Mouse King reveals himself and attacks Clarabelle and the maid toy, eager to take her captive and ruin everything. Clarabelle, fully sick of all of this nonsense, defends herself and knocks the Mouse King unconscious before fleeing.

As the narration fills the air, the words drift into the walls, the ground, inside the castle, outside—as the words pass through the environment, bursts of color and sound crackle around until the world looks as vibrant as any other. However there is darkness in the air, one not caused by the Story's decay but what is about to transpire.

Outside the castle grounds have transformed into a colorful game board, filled with pitfalls and treasure that could either help or hinder those who try to traverse it. The Mouse King's army breach the outer walls, but the toys, now armed, rally and charge forward, giving it their all to fight and protect their master's home. While the war wages outside, the Aspects must quickly complete their scenes while helping defend the castle.

§ instructions.

The third Act is underway! This is the designated log for all Main Scenes. Others are free to create their own toplevels for the Sub Quests, which are detailed below. Each Main Scene has their own unique toplevel and those cast into the roles are to thread their scene under each. All scene instructions are provided in the toplevels.

Everything from the last Act is carrying over to this one. This includes characters having their toy forms, but they have more control and freedom over what form they take.

Finally, just to be clear, characters who are in Main Scenes are not immediately dropped into their location and will have to head to the designated door and then return. Threading all of that isn't necessary, but it's to help give a better idea that characters can take a break between scenes or wait a bit to help with other things like the Sub Quests.

Feel free to refer to the Game Notes for more detailed info as well as ask questions or clarifications.

§ sub quests.

Everyone is free to participate in the Sub Quests. There are no specific top levels, so you're free to incorporate them however you wish in your own top level.

The outside of the castle looks like the Candyland board game, complete with colored squared paths that lead to various areas and everything outside the path is lava. Technically it's hot glue so while no one would actually perish they would get quite stuck if they step off the path and will need assistance breaking out. Movement through the path is the same as the original game: cards will magically appear for the Aspect to draw from and the picture on the card will dictate their movement. Anyone who tries to act counter to the card or ignore the rules will cause them to suddenly be encased by marshmallows and vaulted into the sky where they will float around until someone directly helps them or pulls a card that will free them.

¶ I. Gather Power-ups. There are numerous paths and some of them lead to special treasure chests that contain power ups that would help deal powerful damage against the encroaching mouse army. They range from cherry bomb explosives to sticky taffy that will block and trap anyone caught in it. Hurry through the game to unlock as many as possible, but be careful—mouse soldiers and erasers are also lurking around the board and may come at the Aspects from the other side. Should they meet, the rules will be lifted to allow engagement, but it's possible to try and play the game and make the enemies break the rules and be punished that way.

¶ II. Destroy Towers. Several licorice towers have been erected by the mouse army and these towers are channeling a dark, magical energy that intermittently fire upon the castle like laser blasts. They are scattered all over the board, so not only must the Aspects traverse through the board and get past any obstacles in their way, but they must also find a way to destroy the tower. Gathering power ups will help.

¶ III. Repair and Upgrade. For those who are less combative, stations are erected near the castle to help repair any toys that have taken damage from the fight. Some may need to be rescued from the board and brought back. For those who are handy, they could help upgrade the toys to be stronger out on the field.

¶ IV. Wildcard. Make up your own prompt!

[Out of all of the characters Jean could have gotten, he managed to land on the Mouse King part. Now he looked like a Beast stuck in a mouse hoodie. Freaking great. Not to mention he was being tended to by a punch of toy servants as he plotted for an attack, it seemed.

Obviously he knows he's not going to be in this scene alone, so he's mostly looking over the scene and waiting on his scene partner to show up.]

[All right, the Storyteller was definitely doing this intentionally. Wearing a dress is one thing, but this is the second time he's been given the role of a fairy in a dress]

Out of my way! [He kicks a few toys blocking the entrance to the tent. Claws dig into the tent material as a disgruntle Hyde with fairy wings and in a dress that barely stays on him enters. Those seams are probably going to rip at some point during this.] You!

[A toy was being held in his claws as it whacks helplessly to be freed. Looking over Jean, he chuckles.] Looking like the vermin that you are I see. [Hello. Welcome to round 2]

[Jean's expression when he sees who walks into the scene with him is rather annoyed. It would have been fine if it was Kazuma, but of course he was being Hyde.

Though when he notices the clothes Hyde was wearing the expression quickly turned into a mix of confusion and amusement, which he tries to hide. Badly.]

And I guess you're the beautiful fairy queen you were always meant to be.

[It's most likely going to turn into a fight anyway so why not say that.]
chippedsoul: (wanna bet?)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-15 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I'm going to kill you. [He tosses the toy aside.]

I think that's what I'm suppose to do anyway, right? [He sort of paid attention to the script.]
rustyhonesty: (Oh really now?)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-15 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jean is surprisingly calm even with a threat like that. He gets up from where he's seated.]

Something like that. Though I think I'm the one who should be murdering here...

[plot twist: the fairy is a crazy murderer.]
chippedsoul: (you haven't won just yet)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah, what a wasted role. [Honestly he'd let him walk off cause why stop someone from doing horrible things? Yet something was gripping at him to ensure that Jean doesn't. Quite an annoying influence this scene has.]

I rather just watch you do the act, but I guess if I really got to stop you, I'll make sure to be thorough. [He flexes his claws, preparing to strike.]
rustyhonesty: (Skeptical)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jean sighs, preparing his own class. He's supposed to be a mouse but if he sticks to what he should be, he'd be in big trouble.]

Just make sure you don't actually kill me. The mouse king is still needed.

[At least he's pretty that's the case.

At least this time he has a little bit of a boost from the story, but he's still pretty confident this scene will turn out different than it should.]
chippedsoul: (It's more fun this way)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-16 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
And what makes you think I'll stick to what the story needs? [Storyteller never specified he couldn't kill the Mouse King. By accident, yep! He lunges forward to swipe at Jean's chest. The poor dress is going to get torn off before this fight is over.]
rustyhonesty: (Charge)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-17 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Jean manages to jump back before Hyde's attack connects.]

Well, I hope the storyteller gives you a permanent dress then!

[He swipes his claws towards Hyde in return, with plenty of power behind it.]

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-17 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hyde doesn't take the full hit, but it's enough to knock him backwards. More bits of the dress is torn to pieces.]

Oh you've gotten a blessing from this story, haven't you?

[Even though he's not exactly playing the right role. He'll grab one of the tent poles, pulling it out of the ground. It's enough to cause the tent to collapse onto itself and for Jean to lose sight of him.]
rustyhonesty: (In this life there's no surrender)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-17 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Of course he would bring the whole tent down. That's what you get when you fight inside. Jean tears open a portion of the tent to get out of the mess, while the soldiers tending to him earlier get out to look for the Fairy with their weapons in hand.]

Is this hide and seek now?
chippedsoul: (buy my wares)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-17 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all! [One moment there was a soldier beside Jean, the next it was sliced in half. This is a fairy from hell, cause now Hyde has a large cleaver.]

Just wanted to bring my own toy to the fun. Hehehehe [Or perhaps wanting to even the odds between him. He's far too stubborn to allow Jean an easy win, if at all.]

Aren't all you goody two shoes looking for a happy ending anyway? The "Mouse King" may as well call it quits.
rustyhonesty: (Shut the fuck up)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Great, now he was armed and even more dangerous. Now he really had to be careful not to die.]

Probably. Though I really sympathize with the Mouse King right now. Everyone focusing their attention on the Beast like idiots. Even the fairy, which is pissing him off.

[Eren that, Eren this, Eren Eren Eren... yeah, he was more important than Jean could ever be, but it did annoy him regardless. Especially when the girl she loved only had eyes for that jerk.

... so yeah, he relates.]

So no thanks on the quitting part!

[He yells this as he charges forward to attack Hyde, ready to dodge the cleaver when necessary.]
chippedsoul: (wanna bet?)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hoh? [Well that was an interesting claim. He ducks out of Jean's way.]

Do I sense a hint of jealousy? Would you really commit a murder if things don't go your way? [He turns back around to swing his cleaver.]
rustyhonesty: (Pushed to the limit)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-18 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't commit a murder, really, but I'm really bad at holding back my frustration.

[Jean raises his paws to catch the cleaver between them to try and swing it and Hyde away.]
chippedsoul: (you haven't won just yet)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-19 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jean will manage to catch him, but before he's sent flying, he leaves Jean with a parting gift of claws slashing into flesh. He doesn't know where he struck, just that he made contact.]

Hahah why bother holding back? Just accept and let it all out! [He's coming back low, raising his leg to kick him in the side.]
rustyhonesty: (Freaking ouch)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-19 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[The claws hit him in his right shoulder. He lets out a pained yelp. Fucking ow.]

Because I'm not crazy like you are!

[Jean manages to block the kick with his arm. It hurts, but getting kicked to the side would hurt even more. And this way he can attempt to sink his claws into his leg.]
chippedsoul: (flirting the truth)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-21 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I doubt that! [He feels the impact from those claws, but he just laughs, raising his cleaver.]

We all have a crazy side to us! [The cleaver is coming down to chop that arm that's got his leg, if Jean doesn't do something.]
rustyhonesty: (Straight towards the neck)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-26 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Jean is quick to let go of his leg to avoid getting chopped. It was still too close for his comfort. He attempts to kick Hyde away from himself to get some time to figure out what to do.]

There are different levels of crazy and I'm not even near yours.
chippedsoul: (wanna bet?)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-27 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You're just holding yourself back. Everyone is! [He leaps up into the air to avoid the kick, diving back towards Jean with cleaver ready to slice at his head.]
rustyhonesty: (You piece of shit!)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-28 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jean jumps back and lets out a loud howl towards Hyde. After the previous campaign one of his new abilities was unlocking said howl that can temporarily paralyze his opponents. If he's going to use it for something, it was now or never and just hope it works on another aspect as well as it does on erasers.]
chippedsoul: (point me to the sun)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-06-28 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Agghh! [That howl is going to effectively cause a lot of problems for Hyde with his heighten sense of hearing. So he's going to miss his target, crashing back into the ground as his ears continue to ring.]
rustyhonesty: (Nineteen ★ No)

[personal profile] rustyhonesty 2021-06-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[That was more effective than he initially thought it would be. Jean wastes no time and grabs the cleaver out of Hyde's hands.

As he's holding it and looking down, a thought passes that he could use it. If he used it now... it would be self-defense, right? Hyde was dangerous anyway. Who knew if he would stop otherwise. He could end this scene that way. No one would blame him for that, right?

...

Instead of actually using the cleaver for anything, he tosses it as far as he can with his strength. And then cringing because his shoulder still stings from before so throwing things isn't the best idea.]

I'm just about ready to wrap this scene.
chippedsoul: (kill in my sleep)

[personal profile] chippedsoul 2021-07-01 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Hyde is locked in place to do much other than grit his teeth as his weapon is taken from him. He expected a counterattack while he was getting his bearings, but instead he could see his weapon being tossed away.]

What the hell? [He's back on his feet, shaking his head. His ears still ringing.] What do you mean "wrap this scene"? This isn't over! [Man this guy don't know when to quit. His claws are ready to strike once more.]
