Chapter 06: The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Victor Frankenstein

Frankenhyde—

As the Halloween festivities wind down to a close, on the evening of the last day everyone's journals will illuminate to indicate they have received a message from the Storyteller.

Greetings everyone. We hope you have enjoyed the seasonal festivities despite certain incidents.

We reach out to you now because we have determined which Draft to send you next. It is two stories combined and it may take some of you down your darkest paths. Stay strong and support one another. We fear the Draft is more unstable and vulnerable, so remain vigilant.

Once everyone has gathered outside the library, the Librarians lead the group to the Draftsroom, now with a fancy new plaque indicating that yes, it has a name and no, it is not "Restricted Section." When everyone is in place along with the generous supplies of food, spare clothes, medical kits, and other necessities they may need, the "ritual" is performed and the ribbons of light and runic characters gather around them.

Traveling through the endless Void, the group soon approaches the damaged world they are task to restore. Like all the worlds in the Realm, the Draft before them is shaped like a Book but in oddly poor condition, seemingly sewn back together and with a different front and back cover. The title simply reads "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Victor Frankenstien."

As they approach, arcs of lightning and frost emanate from the Draft and everyone is suddenly overcome with an ominous feeling. Passing through the pages as they enter sends shocks and shivers down everyone's spines, but there's no turning back.

Welcome to FrankenHyde.

"Sister,

I write to you today as an escape from the misery and drudgery of the last several weeks. As you well know, I have been given the unenviable task of sorting through the affairs of one Victor Frakenstein and one Doctor Henry Jekyll. It is a thankless and miserable task, but it must be done. Someone must record the tragedy that struck these brilliant minds, who shone so brightly as to put the sun and the stars themselves to shame and who burned out just as quickly.

I'm sure you remember the dreadful business, but allow me to summarize both for posterity and in the event that the trials of new motherhood have made you forget. Mister Victor Frankenstein was a promising student of biology; Doctor Henry Jekyll was his childhood friend and a well-respected chemist and medical doctor. Both were known for their experiments, and at the time of the Incident both were rumored to be working on something remarkable. It all began Halloween, in Londeva at the Annual Londeva Faire for the Sciences…"

Londeva is a foggy, chilly city, not unlike the setting to every Gothic horror novel or movie you may have possibly read or seen. Everything is in an odd shade of grey, as usual, though it is notably darker and grimier than usual despite it being a festive season. Or perhaps it's because of this particular season that the city looks even worse, daresay "creepier" than usual. Ghoulish decorations and "stained" figurines line the streets and hang from various windows and eaves, the wind that howls through the alleyways making some seem alive. Stores have their windows boarded up (though the sign does say "Open"), lights flicker as circuits occasionally cut out, and is that something moving just out the corner of your eye? Maybe it was just an abandoned newspaper. Hopefully.

Only one building seems more "alive" than the rest, the lights vibrant and almost warm and welcoming. Even the Halloween decorations seem kinder, although some of the sculptures and jack-o-lanterns seem to twitch and shift in place. This is where the Aspects will be staying, and while there are no other tenants, there are "friendly" Blots to help staff and maintain the building during their stay. Aspects can choose which room(s) they wish to reside in during their temporary stay and will be given a goodie bag filled with candies and sweets as a welcoming gift. . Each room is fully furnished for all basic necessities including personal bathrooms, but the kitchen is communal. Anyone can enter and use the kitchens but there are staff as well to provide meals which are served at a designated dining area on the main floor. Each room will also be unique with differing decor and even personal objects, as if someone may have lived there before. Perhaps one room looks as if it once belonged to a seamstress, another a cat lover. Although some rooms also appear in similar taste to the Aspects themselves, this could be a glimpse of the kind of people who used to live in this world.

Not far from the apartment building, a big banner hangs over the street and reads "Annual Londeva Faire for the Sciences" with a smaller banner promising "Exciting Thrills! Chilling Facts! Interesting Experiments!" just beneath it. Beyond the banners, assorted experiments and projects lie forgotten by their creators.

And beyond those lie even more bannered archways, each marked with names and a number: the doors to enter your scenes.
